DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR JANUARY 1997
YOUTH SPORTS
Staff was disappointed with the news that Youth Sports Coordinator, Marcel Verdugo
accepted a full time position with the City of Encinitas as their Sports Coordinator.
While saddened to lose Marcel, all employees are excited about his professional
future. Encinitas got a real good one in Marcel! Meanwhile staff continues with work on
the 700 member Youth Basketball Program that runs through March. Staff is also
preparing for Youth Track & Field and the 1st Edition of the Brad Holland Basketball
Camp sponsored by our Department.
ADULT SPORTS
Staff is currently recruiting teams for Spring Softball, Men's Basketball and new Soccer
Leagues at Poinsettia Community Park.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Marc Beasley and staff just completed their Holiday "Kidz" Camp with more than 40
campers enjoying the two week session. Highlights included side trips to the Wild
Animal Park and the Escondido Ice Skate Park as well as a fun-filled New Year's Eve
Sleepover at Calavera Hills Community Park. Staffs next event is the February Junior
High Winter Dance whose title is "Jammy Jam."
DAYTRIPPERS
Travel south of the border to Ensenada on Saturday, January 25. OLE! In February,
excursions include a jaunt to the Viejas Casino, February 2, and to Buffalo Bills at
Stateline, February 16 & 17. February 22, marks the date for Daytripper enthusiasts to
visit the Norton Simon Museum and the Descanso Gardens.
POINSETTIA PARK
The Parks division has been busy preparing Poinsettia Park for the grand opening on
Saturday, January 18, 1997. The park has been weeded, fertilized and pre-emergence
herbicide applied to all shrub/ground cover areas. Right-of-way landscaping and
irrigation improvements for Paseo Del Norte located above Poinsettia park are
scheduled for completion this January, weather permitting.
