ITEM EXPLANATION: Attached is the Director's Report for March 1997 outlining some of the Departments current activities and upcoming events. EXHIBITS: 1. Director's Report - March 1997. 04 March 13,1997 TO: COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR MARCH 1997 YOUTH SPORTS Youth Sports Coordinator, Michael Cosmo is preparing for the 1st Edition of the "Brad Holland Spring Break Basketball Camp". Mr. Holland is the Head Men's Basketball Coach at U.S.D., and chose Carlsbad to hold this exciting basketball camp. Mike and staff are also preparing for the Annual Youth Track & Field Program that culminates with the Citywide Track Meet on April 26. SPECIAL EVENTS Marc Beasley and staff are preparing for the Annual Spring Egg Hunts. Scheduled for Saturday, March 29, staff will be conducting "Hunts" at Calavera Hills, Holiday and Stagecoach Parks. These "Egg Expeditions" will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Marc's staff is also preparing for the annual "Kidz Spring Break Camp" scheduled for March 31 - April 4, at Holiday Park. Stay N' Play, a wildly successful afterschool program is going into its 5th session at Pine School. More than 60 youngsters eagerly wait the resumption of this supplemental educational/athletic/creative program brought to you by our Special Events Section. DAYTRIPPERS Upcoming newsworthy trips include two special offerings. "Glory of Easter" is a trip that will be taking citizens to the Crystal Cathedral to experience the superb Palm Sunday story of "Passion Week" and the "Glory of Easter". Also offered in late April is the exciting Annual return of the Ramona Pageant. Utilizing an entire mountainside, this poignant love story details the love of Ramona and Allesandro as staged by more than 350 local residents. SENIORS The upcoming calendar at Carlsbad's Senior Center is "jam-packed" with exciting offerings. "The Golden Tones" Santa Anita Racetrack (and they're out of the gate) "Compassionate Communication" (Hosted by Hospice of the North County) Lawrence Welk Theater - "A Salute to Movie Musicals" INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES All the many hundreds of youngsters are currently preparing for their annual Dance recitals that come up in June. Instructor, Michelle Alspaw, has slated two performances for June 7 at the Escondido Performing Arts Center. Instructor, Linda Wilkerson, will host shows for her students on June 13 and 14 at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center. CALAVERA HILLS COMMUNITY CENTER Calavera Hills Community Center has a new fenced play area for our preschool program, after school programs and private parties outside the two multi-purpose rooms. This safe play area has already received rave reviews from our preschoolers, parents and scout troops. It will be a perfect addition for our camp program as well. The Calavera Hills Community Park has 9,415 patrons visit our facility for reserved activities in the month of February. A special "thank you" to the parks crew and facility staff for making Calavera Park a great place to play and work! The tennis courts at Calavera Park have recently been resurfaced and are not currently open for play. However, the tennis courts will soon be open for play 7 days a week on a first come/first serve basis. PRESCHOOL Over 190 students are currently enrolled in our Preschool Program. Our creative and dedicated staff of Preschool Instructors plan activities for children 18 months to 5 years old. The FALL 1997 PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION PACKETS WILL BE OUT ON APRIL 1ST. Packets can be picked up at all three Community Centers. GRAPHICS XF ^ ^WA^X The Recreation Division Graphics section received a California Parks and Recreation Showcase Award for the 1996 Carlsbad Triathlon Logo. Graphic Technician Zoame Shipman created the design that was featured on our Race application, T-shirt and race publicjiyr-£ongratulations Zoame!!
