ITEM EXPLANATION: Attached is the Director's Report for April 1997 outlining some of the Departments current activities and upcoming events. EXHIBITS: 1. Director's Report - April 1997. 08 April 10,1997 TO: COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR APRIL 1997 YOUTH SPORTS Mike Cosmo and his staff have just completed a Spring Break Camp. Mike invited U.S.D. Head Men's Basketball Coach, Brad Holland to Stagecoach gymnasium for a week long camp. Mr. Holland and his staff entertained 42 youngsters during the week as the kids learned advanced basketball skills from Mr. Holland, a former Ail-American at U.C.L.A. and a former 1st round draft choice of the Los Angeles Lakers. The next upcoming event for Youth Sports is the Annual Youth Track & Field season. SPECIAL EVENTS Marc Beasley and staff have just completed another highly successful edition of "Spring Break Camp", eighty-five youngsters took part in the week long activities, and a number of parents expressed their pleasure with the itinerary that Marc and his creative staff utilized during the week. Next up for Special Events is the "Summer Splash" Teen Dance slated for May 23, at the Carlsbad Swim Complex. Marc also mentions that the Stay N' Play Program at Pine/Jefferson Schools' is preparing to participate in the Multicultural Faire at Jefferson Elementary School as well as Earth Day Festivities at Pine School. ENRICHMENT CLASSES Robin Bettin reports that Dance Class Recitals are fast approaching. Michelle Alspaw's performers will have their day on Sunday, June 7 at the Escondido Performing Arts Center. Times of the performances are 1:00 and 6:00 p.m. Linda Wilkerson's troops will be performing on Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14 at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center. Friday's performances will be at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday's will commence at 2:00 p.m. FUNDRAISER Under the supervision of Robin Bettin, the Carlsbad Youth Baseball Group recently spent a Saturday "sprucing up Carlsbad" as part of a program to raise money for their group. Youngsters took on sponsors for the day, and performed various projects throughout the City to touch up, clean up and beautify the area. Numbers are not in yet, but more than 200 kids took part in this first effort in fundraising and beautifying the City - 09 EXHIBIT 1 Y»mras=e. SENIORS Twenty eight active seniors had the opportunity on April 3 to learn the secrets to getting a good night's sleep as a seminar at the Senior Center offered advice on this subject. April 3 also marked the date for the long anticipated Hahn Theatre show "Kiss Them and Wish Them Goodbye". Twenty five participants had a ball at the performance. Upcoming programs include: April 12 TRIP Stephen Birch Aquarium April 14 SEMINAR Public Utilities Commission April 17 TRIP Santa Anita Racetrack April 24 TRIP Salute to Great Musicals - Theatre April 24 SEMINAR Compassionate Communication April 24 TRIP Valley Jr. High "Showstoppers" Performance April 28 SEMINAR Introduction to Relaxation April 24, also denotes the start of a 6 week course "Developing Your Creativity." The Senior Center continues to provide a wealth of exciting and varied programming for Carlsbad's very active Senior Community. PARKS At Poinsettia Community Park, the soccer fields will be closed until August for any league play and practices in order to allow establishment of the turf. The Parks division will be installing a water line at Cadencia Park for planting drought tolerant material in conjunction with La Costa Heights Elementary School to plant some native plant gardens and fire retardant gardens from the result of the Harmony Grove fire. It will be monitored and maintained by the La Costa Heights Elementary School and La Costa High School. CARLSBAD GOLF COURSE The design and approval process for the golf course has started. Staff is analyzing several alternate golf course routing plans. Environmental consultants are studying the site and preparing opportunities and constraints maps to be used in analyzing design alternatives.
