ITEM EXPLANATION: Attached is the Director's Report for May 1997 outlining some of the Departments current activities and upcoming events. EXHIBITS: 1. Director's Report - May 1997. 09 May 14, 1997 TO: COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR MAY 1997 ADULT SPORTS April 7th marked the date the Adult Sports Section completed its first edition of Men's Outdoor Soccer. Custom soccer jerseys went to the winners. Poinsettia Park was the league's site, and interest is high for the next season. 5-man basketball and softball leagues are currently winding down. 5-man has been the most successful edition to date, with 6 leagues playing Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at Calavera Hills and Stagecoach and 36 teams vying for championships. Winners will be awarded custom reversible mesh tops. Staff foresees this program growing even larger in upcoming years. Softball winners will be awarded custom Carlsbad t-shirt's upon completion of their playoffs, and with the addition of Poinsettia Community Park, staff excepts team numbers to increase twice over in the next few years. TRIATHLON Race applications are now available. Interested in volunteering? Please call Betsy Kennedy at 434-2911. A new event to the Pre-Triathlon festivities will be a Women's Surf Contest. Sponsored by Waterwomen Inc., the event will promote women and their efforts in competing in surfing events and ocean activities in general. The event is just one of many slated for Saturday, July 12, the day before the Annual Triathlon. PART-TIME EMPLOYEES OF THE QUARTER The Recreation Division is proud to announce the following recipients as "Part-Time Employees of the Quarters: ANGELA ESTRADA ALANNA GIBBS TAMI MASON Angela has served as Dave Millikan's "right hand person" during the quarter, handling all duties from the front desk and computer, to training staff and performing facility set- up for the gym. Tami has served in the role of Assistant Adult Sports Coordinator, helping Sondee Oiler. She oversees the Adult Basketball Leagues and has already established herself as an integral part of our Triathlon Team. Alanna is a 16 year old Carlsbad High student who has quickly established herself as a vital member of our staff. Her work in site supervision of the Adult Soccer Program has been outstanding, and her dedication to task in helping out at the office has been greatly appreciated. CONGRATULATIONS TO EACH OF THESE OUTSTANDING RECREATION EMPLOYEES!10 EXHIBIT 1 ENRICHMENT CLASSES Michele Alspaw and more than 300 youngsters will be performing in the 10th Anniversary of "Dance for Children" recital programs. The program has grown so large that Michelle's performances are being held at the California Center for the Performing Arts and will also be performing at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center on Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14. More than 100 kids will be performing in these two programs. DAYTRIPPERS OLE! Trips are planned to Ensenada on June 14 and 21st. Highlights of the trips include breakfast in Puerto Nuevo and dinner in Rosarito Beach. Another exciting offering is the upcoming Padres game with arch-rival Los Angeles Dodgers providing the faire as appetizers to the Padre bats, 3-D Fireworks will follow the game slated for July 4th. LJk mrc^Sf._ls»l SENIORS On May 14 there will be an interactive theater experience called "Folly!" performed by Seniors on Stage. We are looking forward to being part of their "serious approach to absolute lunacy." A Senior Safari trip on May 17, will be setting sail from Newport Harbor to enjoy a narrated tour of the islands, channels and magnificent homes bordering the harbor. The trip will include lunch at the Balboa Pavilion and a tour of Roger's Gardens. We're going to the dogs on May 21, the Carlsbad Police K-9's that is! The K-9 officers will talk about what they do and provide a demonstration of the dogs in action. On May 22, a clinical audiologist will talk about general hearing loss and coping techniques and tools for the hard of hearing. Also, on May 22, the Senior Safari will travel to Simi Valley and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. We'll end the month with a presentation about disease transmission on May 29. An infection control practitioner will talk about how diseases are transmitted and how to reduce our risks of getting sick. Her discussion will include colds, flu, TB, hepatitis, and more. AQUATICS The Swim Complex is finishing five sets of Spring lessons at the end of May. The Water Safety Instructor course ends May 22nd, with ten new WSI's. The pool is hosting Avocado League prelims and finals May 14th and 17th, there will be about 350 people at one time at the pool on these two days. State of California Jr. Lifeguard swim testing is happening on weekend mornings through July. The pool will be hosting six "pool parties" through mid-June, including Summer Splash teen dance. Screening and training of summer staff is ongoing. The summer schedule and programs begin June 16th. The Aquatics section received over 200 mail-in registration envelopes on the first day. PARKS The Tree, Median and Parks part-time staff have completed the installation of new irrigation (reclaim) and landscape along Paseo Del Norte, west edge of Poinsettia Park. Over 500 trees, shrubs and 40 flats of ground cover were planted. The median sand clean up on Carlsbad Boulevard has been postponed another week due to the sea wall contractor still performing work in the area. The work should start the week of May 19th and should be completed in a little over a week. The work will be a joint effort between the Parks, Tree, Median and Streets Divisions.
