DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR JUNE 1997
YOUTH SPORTS
Mike Cosmo and his staff are preparing for a summer that will see more than thirty, one
week camps offered to Carlsbad youngsters. His first week offerings include, Basketball,
Bodyboard and Mini-Hawk - an introduction to sports for 4-7 year olds.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Marc Beasley and staff are cranking up the machinery for their most industrious camp
summer ever. Marc is offering one and two week camps for kids throughout the summer,
camps that run all day. Highlights include a field trip planned for each week, new and
innovative programming and a highly trained and motivated staff that will ensure that all
participants stay enthused and active throughout each week.
Marc's staff punctuated their preparation for the summer by offering the early Summer
edition of the Holiday Park Garage Sale. More than 75 vendors took part in the Sale on
Saturday, June 7, and close to 5,000 people came through the park that day seeking their
own definition of a "special little treasured item."
DANCE RECITAL
Dance instructor, Michele Alspaw, and almost 400 children recently participated in the 10th
Annual "Dance for Children" recital at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido.
Michelle choreographed each of the program's numbers as the children performed to
packed houses at both the 1:00 and 6:00 p.m., shows. A huge cast party followed the
performances, and all the participants had a great time. GREAT SHOW, MICHELLE,
CONGRATULATIONS!
SENIORS
One of the greatest highlights for May was the Carlsbad Police Department's K-9 Unit
presentation and demonstration on May 21. Over 75 people attended and they were very
impressed by both the dogs and the officers.
We started a computer class; on June 4, "Introduction to Windows 95." Seventeen seniors
are taking the weekly class and their response has been very positive.
A number of educational presentations are taking place over the next few weeks. We heard
from the S.D Regional Household Hazardous Materials Program (June 2) and the manager
of Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) spoke on June 9. We'll be
hearing about the legal system June 11, and the Social Security Administration June 16,
and a Qi Gong demonstration is planned for June 12. This
oriental exercise combines elements of Tai Chi and yoga and a-€ week Qi Gong class will
start on June 26.
Our Senior Safari will travel to see the 1997 Tour of World Figure Skating Champions on
Thursday, June 19"'. This tour brings together the greatest gathering of Olympic and World
Champions, representing over 25 different skaters. We expect a full bus for this wonderful
event.
The Warblers will perform in concert on June 18, and we'll round out the month with a
presentation on skin cancer from two dermatologists, followed by a free skin screening and,
on the same day, offer hearing tests performed by a clinical audiologist.
World renown composer-pianist, John Tesh, will entertain us for this special performance on
Sunday, June 22nt! Reserved seating for this encore performer promises to be a special
evening for the Senior Safari.
Senior Day at Del Mar Fair, Thursday, June 26lh. A full day of fun, food, exhibits, rides and
craft displays. Senior Safari will be there from early morn to sample all the goodies.
July 6 brings our 9lh annual ice cream social at Magee Park. Entertainment will be provided
by The Fabulous Earrings and Thrifty has generously donated most of the ice cream. We
anticipate hundreds of people joining in the fun and are looking forward to a great afternoon.

at Calavera Community Center for sessions SD, SE, and SG swim lessons.
PARKS
The Parks division has just completed renovation of the landscape at Car Country Park.
Older acacia shrubs were removed. New ground cover (gazania and day lilies) planted and
a new section of lawn was installed. These improvements will help improve the visibility as
well as the appearance/color at this site.
Safety Center landscaping has been improved with new plantings of perennial flowering
shrubs (i.e., rapheolepis, day lily, agapanthus) along with these plantings the drip irrigation
was also upgraded.
The Park division is currently preparing for the summer jazz concerts and the renovation of
the soccer fields. The Fuerte field will be completely re-stolonized. The bank area adjacent
to this field will also be gunnited over with concrete. This project is a joint effort of La Costa
Youth Organization, the Lightning Soccer Club and the Carlsbad Community Service
Department.
