Sondee also volunteers the information that the Men's Soccer League just resumed action as 6 teams, two more than in the past, are seeing action weekly at Poinsettia Park. SPECIAL EVENTS The summer has flown by and kids are back in school. Final numbers will be in soon, but staff can confidently state that this summer has been the most successful to date by a large margin. Marc Beasley and his outstanding staff provided "Kidz Camps" each week of the summer and served more than 800 kids. These are all-day camps, the most challenging to program and stay energized. Parents continually commented on the thorough enjoyment their youngsters had experienced at the camps. Bryan Hargett, Jessica Hagan and Dale Cosmo supervised the many contract camps throughout the summer. It was their most ambitious effort to date as they doubled the number run last year. Kudos to Marc and his creative staff, and Bryan, Jess, and Dale for a job well done in assuming the reins of programming for the department's most ambitious summer ever! DAYTRIPPERS K Dave Millikan and Carmen Lopez report that the "Daytrippers" agenda is "jam packed" during September, October and November. First up is the annually popular, "Danish Days" in Solvang, California. Scheduled for September 20, all in attendance will partake of the town's fine food, including ALGLESKIVER and MEDISTER POLSE. Other trips scheduled include a Viejas Casino jaunt, a Julian Backcountry Excursion, viewing of the new "Nethercutt Collection in Sylmar, California and a shopping excursion to Tijuana. The first week of November includes an overnight trip to Laughlin, Nevada for those of you who feel lucky. AQUATICS With the start of the school year the Swim Complex settles into its fall schedule. We have a number of programs going on in addition to our regular lap and recreation swim. Most notably Carlsbad High School's boys waterpolo team has started and is looking forward to another strong season. Also, the PE department at Carlsbad High School runs an Aquatic PE class here daily starting at 7:30 a.m. During the months of September, October and November the swim complex still runs swimming lessons 7 days a week. Although we don't offer nearly the same amount of classes at this time of year, we still offer a good number, especially for beginner swimmers. For those who have been by our place, you may have seen our parking lot under construction. As of the beginning of September, the month long project was completed and the lot looks better than ever. As always, Masters, Aqua X and North Coast Aquatics swim programs are going strong, with Elementary and Jr. High water polo programs starting in Mid-September. A presentation about massage will take place at the end of the month and the speaker will offer free 5 minute massages after his talk. We expect quite a turnout so we're having people pre-register for the massages. PARKS The Parks division has been busy these past few months. Several projects of significance were completed. • Fuerte Park @ Las Costa Meadows School had a new hybrid bermuda field installed. This as well as the concrete gunniting of the slope adjacent to the baseball field was funded by the youth leagues; La Costa Youth Organization and Lighting Soccer Club. The work was coordinated and implemented with Parks division staff. These new additions should help provide quality athletic fields for the south Carlsbad area. ^ , 12 • The Carlsbad Boulevard medians at the new seawall have been replanted with shrubs and ground cover. This project involved removal of the built up sand deposits as well as an upgraded irrigation system. • The Aviara fields were recently re-irrigated. The construction on the new school encroached onto the field area. This encroachment consumed the irrigation main line and all the valves for the fields. Staff has replaced the main line, installed new valves and activated the irrigation system. A storm drain was also constructed across a portion of the soccer field. This disruption has caused a large portion of the turf to be removed. Staff is currently watering the fields by hand whenever possible as there currently is no electrical service available to the controller. • Athletic fields at Valley, Jefferson, Magnolia and Poinsettia were recently renovated to accommodate this Fall's soccer season.
