ITEM EXPLANATION: Attached is the Director's Report for October 997 outlining some of the Departments current activities and upcoming events. EXHIBITS: 1. Director's Report - October 1997. 09 October 10, 1997 TO: COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR FROM: Recreation Supervisor I DIRECTOR'S REPORT FOR OCTOBER 1997 SPECIAL EVENTS Marc Beasley and staff just finished their most ambitious summer ever, and the numbers back up this fact; 658 area youngsters were served through the Summer "Kids Camp" Program. This number is almost double the previous year. Marc and his staff went through extensive training in June, and the 10 weeks of camp offered were well received by Carlsbad parents. Marc also forwards information that the Department's involvement with area schools will intensify this year. The 3rd edition of the popular Stay N' Play Program has begun at Pine School with more than 50 excited youngsters taking part. The Recreation Division has two outstanding staff persons, Barbara Moreno and Tim Delgado, heading up that effort. Marc states that he is currently also working with Valley Jr. High and their A.S.B. to co-author and sponsor certain events for these students. Finally, Marc reminds us that the Fall Festival featuring a wide variety of entertainment for youngsters is slated for Saturday, November 1, at the Calavera Hills Community Park, hours are 2:00-5:00 p.m. DAYTRIPPERS W Dave Millikan and Carmen Lopez remind us that a Tour of the NETHERCUTT COLLECTION will take place on Saturday, October 25. Additional trips include an excursion to Tijuana on November 1, which includes shopping, lunch and an entertaining program at the Cultural Center in town. December will bring the opportunity to enjoy the annual "Glory of Christmas" program at Garden Grove's famous CRYSTAL CATHEDRAL. Wrapping up another outstanding year for the Department and its excursion schedule will be the annual trek to the Rose Parade on the morning of January 1, 1998. KRUGER HOUSE PRESCHOOL The Kruger House Preschool Play yard recently a facelift thanks to Eagle Scout candidate, Brandon Miller. Brandon designed, organized and implemented his plan to put in a sprinkler system and lawn behind the building. His fellow scouts, Nathan Miller, Greg Shou, Dan Shaw, Cole Thompson, Mike Burrell, Ryan Harley, Benny Packard, Buddy Packard and Jimmy McDougal assisted Brandon with this project. Brandon did a wonderful job putting in the grass, adding beauty to the play yard and helping iin eliminating the problem of dirt and dust. THANK YOU BRANDON! EXHIBIT 1 '10 PART-TIME EMPLOYEE AWARDS Recipients of the Part-Time Employee of the Quarter were recently announced in the Recreation Division: The award winners for the period of July through September were as follows: TIM DELGADO -ADULT SPORTS/SPECIAL EVENTS/YOUTH SPORTS Tim works for a variety of areas in the Recreation division because all supervisors love to use him. Tim is a head leader for the Stay N' Play Program, scorekeeps adult sports leagues and serves as one of the Department's finest youth referees. JIM LOISO - ADULT SPORTS/YOUTH SPORTS Jim serves as a lead site supervisor for Adult Sports and a Gym Supervisor for Youth Sports. Jim is always conscientious to his duties, and never, ever late to his assigned venue. KATHY CROUTHHAMEL -ASSISTANT OFFICE SPECIALIST - HARDING Kathy has been invaluable in filling the gap as the Center moved to fill the vacated position of Office Specialist. Kathy is a joy to work with, and serves the public with courtesy and diplomacy. CHRIS HARMON - CALAVERA HILLS COMMUNITY CENTER Chris serves as "right-hand" person to Gail Watts at the Center. Chris is enthusiastic, in fact exuberant about his job, and bends over backwards to serve the public! Congratulations to all these fine employees in the Recreation Division! mtfllsSENIORS On Saturday September 27, the 11th Annual Gerico's Golf Tournament was very successful, 71 golfers participated and we had hundreds of prizes donated for the event. October 1, we had a speaker from Scripps Clinic San Marcos. He discussed wellness, focusing specifically on prevention of osteoporosis and heart disease, 15 people attended and benefited greatly from the information he shared. October 9, a special screening of "The Bells of St. Mary's" attracted 20 people. Daniels Cablevision brought snacks, gave out prizes and provided the film. October 11, we will be working with the North County Health Services to provide flu vaccinations again this year. We anticipate several hundred seniors, aged 60 and over, will receive their shots on Saturday.
