STAFF: BRADSHAW RECOMMENDED ACTION: Accept and file: ITEM EXPLANATION: Attached is the monthly report to the Parks and Recreation Commissioner’s for the month of January 1998. EXHIBITS: 1. January 13,1998 TO: ACTING COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR CITY ENGINEER FROM: Recreation Supervisor I PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSIONERS’ REPORT - JANUARY 1998 DAYTRIPPERS During the coming months, six buses full of Daytrippers will be visiting the new Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The Department cannot offer enough trips to this wildly popular destination. A trip to the lndio Date Festival is also scheduled for mid-February. Additionally, a Stateline Overnighter to the Primadonna is scheduled for February 16, 17 and 18. AQUATICS The Swim Complex has begun its winter schedule. The Adult Lap Swim Program has ,-- seen more participation as is historic in the month of January (New Year’s Resolutions?). Also, the Carlsbad High School’s Water Polo team is currently wrapping up their fall season. Five more home games are slated at the Swim Complex. Recently, the Complex hosted a two-day tournament that brought teams from throughout Southern California. As always, the Masters, Aqua-X and North Coast Aquatics Swim Programs are thriving and growing. New Elementary and Jr. High Water Polo programs are being held Monday through Thursday afternoons and Sunday afternoons. Walk-in and phone-in registration for spring swim lessons and safety training programs begins on February 14. INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES In September, Enrichment Class Spanish Instructor, Don Clifford, was asked to teach City firemen the rudiments of Spanish so that they would be able to pass a Spanish Proficiency test. Thirty of our employees took advantage of Don’s offer during a ten week course offered by Mr. Clifford. Culinary Wizardry, a cooking class for adults with developmental challenges, has gotten off to a strong start. All of the students take a bus to attend the class and a number of m x =L= H m ,- H 4 #=J students require some assistance once at the class. Staff is very pleased to offer this class and believe this service will bode well for a continuing strong attendance at each session. The main drive behind the class is to equip student with the tools to be creative and independent when in the kitchen. b- 08 /c SPECIAL EVENTS Marc Beasley and staff have just completed another very popular edition of Winter Camp. This two week session encompasses the two weeks of Christmas and New Year’s. Youngsters enjoyed all forms of activities and field trips during this exciting two weeks. Next for Special Events is the Teen Dance in February. SEN IO RS The Senior Safari was busy during the Holidays and included forays to the following venues: Upcoming..
