October 14, 1998 -c TO: PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION FROM: Recreation Supervisor I COMMISSIONER’S REPORT FOR OCTOBER 1998 DAYTRIPPERS Not to be outdone by our wildly popular ‘Getty Museum’ trips, Daytrippers have signed on in record numbers for the ‘EnsenadalPuerto Nuevo’ trip on November 14. Highlights include a breakfast buffet, the scenery of the Baja Coast, shopping and the famous ‘Puerto Nuevo Lobster Dinner‘. A trip to a stage production of the ‘Radio City Christmas Spectacular‘ starring the world famous Rockettes is a highlight scheduled for December 11 in Los Angeles. ENRICHMENT CLASSES P+ Our Enrichment Class program has teamed up with the Vista Community Clinic to offer no fee seminars, directed towards ‘Healthy Decision Making’. - Project PSI (Postponing Sexual Involvement) provides a direct educational program to teens, ages 12 -14, using the Managing Pressures before Marriage curriculum. The curriculum is founded on the belief that postponing sexual involvement is the healthiest decision for young teens. The main objectives of the program are: 1) to inform young teens about social and peer pressures to become sexually involved; 2) to provide information about the consequences of early sexual involvement; and 3) to model skills which will help young teens say “NO” to sexual involvement. In and Around ‘Your Carlsbad Senior Center‘ SeDtem ber’s Calendar 0 Peggy Elliott from White Sands of La Jolla, provided a humorous yet insightful program, “Am I losing my mind or my memory (or just my perspective)?.” (9/17) 40 people learned about causes of memory loss, how to determine if it has become a significant problem, and offer techniques and exercises to improve or maintain memory. 0 We celebrated National Dog Week (9/21-25) with a Dog Days Guessing Game and a Pooch and Person Look Alike contest. Over 100 votes were cast for the 9 Seniors and 11 dogs who participated and, although there was only one official winner, ALL the participants looked like their dogs! Each person and pooch received a prize and a certificate of participation. - -- . -1 p1 EXHIBIT 1 The 1 2th Annual Koko Palms/ Koko Beach Golf Tournament was held on Saturday, - September 26. A little bit of drizzle didn’t stop the 64 players, who enjoyed the game, dinner and lots of prizes. $1,009 was raised for the Center. October’s Proarams Include.. . .. 0 We provided 240 flu vaccinations on Saturday, October 3. This year’s numbers were higher than last year by 50 people! 0 We will have an information table at “Talk with the Pharmacist,” a program held at Lake San Marcos on 10/15. We will provide info about the Center and hope to show the Center video as well. 0 Tom Fentiman, world-class mediator, will offer a free class entitled Getting Along on 10/20 and 27. 0 Dr. Kristin Mateson will discuss Taking Care of Others and Ourselves, which 4. deals with “caregiver fatigue.” (1 0/26) - Senior Safari The Getry Museum was on tap for Wednesday, September gfi. We took time out of our busy schedule for lunch at the Santa Monica Pier before the tour. The museum is a one-of-a-kind tourist attraction. This was truly a fine day. Saturday, September 19*, Danish Days in Solvang- an early AM departure, continental breakfast on board and arrival mid-morning. The village was filled with artisans, food booths and this annual weekend festival provided something for everyone! Big Bear Lake, September 23d. Our day in the mountains included lunch, a 1 % hour perfect. cruise on the lake and time to browse the quaint shops. The weather was absolutely - A gondola cruise off Naples Island took place Thursday, October lst. We snacked on a picnic of bread, salami, and cheese as we cruised on the canals. A bit of shopping at the Marketplace in Long Beach preceded lunch at Babette’s Feast. Now it’s time for a little more culture - “Driving Miss Daisy” at the North Coast Repertory Theatre is scheduled for a Sunday matinee on November 22“. Coffee and cookies will be served during intermission. Congratulations to these fine employees. - ADULTSPORTS . -a The City of Carlsbad’s adult softball, basketball and soccer leagues will be entering the post-season playoff tournaments in November. Exciting games and competitive play is expected. YOUTH SPORTS 0 Jessica Hagan and her staff just completed a very successful summer that saw staff run more than 25 contract camps and a Summer Basketball Program. These same staff are now preparing for a Winter Youth Basketball Program that will have record sign-ups of more than 900 participants beginning play in November. c: Recreation & Parks Planning Manager City Manager Assistant City Manager All Department Heads
