DAYTRIPPERS
In February the Department will host trips to Anza Borrego Desert, Laughlin in Nevada
and the Van Gogh Exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum. Ensenada, Mexico and
the Getty Museum are on the calendar during the month of March.
ENRICHMENT CLASSES
For many of us, one of our New Year‘s goals (aaain) is “I am going to get back into
shape!” Staff can’t think of a better way than joining “Jauercise,” Yoga, Racy Ladies,
Tennis or Dance classes through the Department. Who knows? Maybe 1999 will be the
year we actually stick to our goals. There are different offerings at each of our
Community Centers. Enjoy fun and fitness in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

Senior Safari E
Christmas at the Hotel Del on December 9‘. Seniors traveled to the Hotel Del for a
tour, witnessed the Christmas displays and partook in a holiday buffevhigh tea. A bit of
shopping was in store at the wharf area before heading across the bridge. Our last
stop of the day was the Knorr Candle Factory for gift buying. We were able to get a
tour of the factory and do hands-on candle making!
Seniors also attended the World Famous Radio City Rockettes’ Christmas Show on
December 1 1. This special matinee performance at the Universal Amphitheater in time
was preceded by lunch and a bit of browsing in the shops. Everyone had a wonderful
time - our seats were just excellent.
On Thursday, December 1 7th, our day started at the Company Stores for last minute
shopping. A representative did a meet and greet service and handed out discount
books before we started looking for those “special” items. Then on to Weidner‘s for
viewing of the beautiful poinsettias on display. Mrs. Weidner gave us a tour and
presentation on the proper care of winter plants. The Four Seasons Aviara was our
final stop of the day. A brief tour, viewing of the Hall of Trees and a holiday buffevhigh
tea wrapped up our afternoon schedule.

Tuesday, January 19* . . . a day with the Marines at Camp Pendleton. Participants will
tour and be able to observe first hand, helicopter training and field maneuvers. We will
even have the opportunity to lunch with the troops.
Our group will be following the swallows to Capistrano on Wednesday, January 27”’.
Amtrak takes us to this delightful community. We will be met at the station and given a
tour of the ‘Old Section’ and the history of the community. Lunch and a tour of the
Mission will follow. c
A recap for 1998, shows the Senior Safari did 43 trips and had over 1400 participants.
A pretty busy year and very active senior community!
CARLSBAD CLEAN SWEEP
On‘February 20*, 1999, the players, coaches and team parents of the Carlsbad Youth
Baseball League will be volunteering for the Annual ‘Carlsbad Clean Sweep’ Campaign.
Volunteers will help to clean up the local beaches, parks and community centers; all the
participants will then meet at Holiday Park for a post-event barbecue. This year In-N-
Out Burger donated lunches for the hungry volunteers. Staff is looking forward to
another successful event that will help to raise funds for CYB and the City’s

COMMUNITY SERVICES BROCHURE &b!
Recently staff started a new program of delivering copies of the Community Services
Brochure to Model Home Sales Offices throughout the Carlsbad area. This is reaching
new home buyers coming into the community. --
KRUGER HOUSE
December is a busy month at Kruger House. We had 120 families participating in our
annual Holiday Raffle fund raiser. With a long time Kruger House parent, Laura Case,
as our chairperson, we were able to sell 1,568 tickets and collect 126 wonderful prizes
from local businesses. December also means our Annual Holiday Program in which the
children from each of our 10 classes sing and perform a special song for all the parents.
We had over 300 parents, grandparents and other family members in attendance for
our festive event. Kruger House dad and recreation employee, Jim Bradshaw,
graciously agreed to be our Santa Claus. He was so convincing that even his twin
daughters, Katie & Emily, thought he was the real Santa!
Staff was also busy painting placemats for the Parks & Recreation Commission Holiday
Dinner. They were such a hit that most of them were seen the next day at the Senior
Citizen’s daily luncheon.
Now that children are back to school, we are fascinated in finding out about how the
rest of the country lives during the cold, long winter months ... making angels in the snow
and building snowmen.

SPECIAL EVENTS
The Special Events Section recently finished hosting its Annual Winter Day Camp. The
camp had 63 campers attend this year‘s edition. The children enjoyed a trip to see the
new Disney movie ‘A Bug’s Life’, went Ice Skating and visited Knott’s Berry Farm. The
children were also visited by Oceanside Home Depot personnel who helped the
campers make paper towel holders for their parents as a holiday gift.
The ‘SNODAZE’ Ski Trip is ready to go! Currently Department staff is prepared to take
50 teenagers to Snow Summit on January 29 and enjoy a day of Skiing and
Skateboarding .

the Scout House.’ More than 150 children attended the party; which included games,
dancing and food. Buena Vista’s Stay ‘N’ Play program will begin on January 11.
There were 75 children enrolled as of the ld of January. Staff has an exciting itinerary

Brad Holland former UCLA All-American, and current University of San Diego Head
Men’s Basketball Coach, and Mr. Steve Scott, world renown Track and Field star and
record holder, will be heading up these two events respectively.

During the holiday weeks, the Ballfield Maintenance crew assisted the Carlsbad Youth

The CY6 Organization purchased the soil and the Recreation Department maintenance
