AB# 999-6 TITLE : CITIZEN REQUEST FOR
BOCCE BALL COURT 0 INFO 1 ACTION
STAFF: BEVERLY I I I
RECOMMENDED ACTION :
Consider a citizen request to develop a Bocce Ball court within a City park facility. Direct staff
accordingly.
ITEM EXPLANATION :
A citizen has requested the City provide a Bocce Ball facility in one of Carlsbad’s parks.
Attached are several photos of the Bocce Ball facility located in Poway. Also attached is a
description of the facility as well as the types of ancillary amenities which would be needed to
maintain the facility.
The Commission may recall a similar request made to the Commission several years ago for a
Lawn Bowling facility. Although the activities are similar, it appears the space requirements for
Bocce Ball are slightly less. However, it was the recommendation of the Commission at that time
to consider the development of a Lawn Bowling facility at the future Larwin parksite during the
parksites master planning process.
At this time staff has not evaluated the cost of developing a Bocce Ball facility or the ongoing
maintenance requirements, or other ancillary amenities associated with its construction.
As an alternative to retrofitting an existing parksite with a Bocce Ball facility, staff would suggest
that development of such a facility would best be considered during the park development
process for one of the future parksites such as Alga Norte, Zone 19, Pine or Larwin parks.
Depending upon the Commission’s direction, if it is recommended to develop a Bocce Ball court
in an existing parksite, staff would need to return with a list of alternative locations, development
costs and funding sources for this project.

Purpose: Bocce Ball Court Request
My name is Joseph Granata. My family and I have been Carlsbad residents since
1976. Both of my daughters still live in Carlsbad. My oldest has recently purchased a
home in Calaveras Hills. Since our move to Carlsbad, I have seen many wonderftl
changes and additions to our great city. Some of those additions have been city parks.
Our parks have tennis courts, soccer and baseball fields; but one thing is missing. I
would like to make a request for the inclusion of a Bocce Ball Court at one of our city
parks. A Bocce Ball Court would equal the size of one-half of a tennis court. (This is a
small space).
In the last two years since my partial retirement, I have grown very fond of the
Bocce Bail game, but I am faced with having to drive to Poway for the nearest courts.
Currently I am the Vice President of the Poway Bocce Ball Club. Our club competes in
tournaments throughout San Diego and Los Angeles; therefore, I know the game very
well. I would like to bring this enjoyable and relaxing game to our city. I have included
several photos of the Poway Bocce Ball Courts as well as the measurements and supplies
needed for a court (or courts). Please consider my request.
Thank You,
31 EXHIBIT 1
BOCCE BALL COURT
(Pictures are included)
Each court is 18 feet wide by 80 feet long and 1 foot deep.
A 3-4 foot wide sidewalk surrounds the court.
The floor of the court is filled with D.G. powder and brick powder.
It is on a very slight incline that allows for water drainage; therefore drainage holes are
needed as well.
A water outlet is needed, as well as lights for games, which tend to run into the evening
A small storage shed (about 3 feet by 3 feet) is necessary for supplies needed for court
upkeep; which is done by the club or group using the courts.
Supplies needed for court upkeep: a hose (to wet the court), a rake (to level the court),
chairs or a bench (for players to sit down).
