COMMISSIONER'S REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 1999
SPECIAL EVENTS
Stay n' Play
The- Stay n"Play program took its first field trip of the year to the San Diego Zoo on
October 21. This was the first time that all three schools (Jefferson, Pine & Buena Vista)
went on a field trip together. The Recreation Department escorted 230 children on this
half day of excursion.
Special Events
The 2nd Annual Haunted Teen Dance was held on October 29 at Calavera Community
Center. The dance was attended by 638 Jr. High students from Valley, Aviara Oaks and
St. Patrick's schools. The teenagers enjoyed a night filled with music, costume - contests, and safe Halloween fun.
The Special Events Section would like to thank the Calavera Staff, Carlsbad Police and
local businesses for their assistance at this years dance.
The next dance will be held at Stagecoach Community Center on December 3. The
theme is "A Night With The Stars".
CALAVERA HILLS PARK
Calavera Hills Park had an excellent October. Another user record was established as
27,339 users were tallied, a 2,000 user increase over October 1998.
The Special Events Teen Dance event at the end of October was very successful,
thanks to Mark Beasley, Richard Navarro and their great staff. The Youth Basketball
evaluations went smoothly as well. Many excited participants are looking forward to
playing in this program over the coming months. Steve Herrera's Adult Basketball and
Softball Leagues are going full-force at Calavera during November as are the other
recreation programs offered on an on-going basis.
YOUTH SPORTS
The Youth Sports Section has completed registration for its Youth Basketball Program
and is expecting close to 700 youngsters says Youth Sports Coordinator, Dale Cosmo.
Dale's staff is also wrapping up a cooperative Youth Flag Football Program that has
been co-sponsored by the Carlsbad Boys and Girls Club. Next on their schedule is the
gth Annual Youth Baseball Clinic scheduled for the second week of January.

ENRICHMENT CLASSES
specialty classes, recitals are given for friends and family the last day of class. The
enrichment class, “Let’s Bring Out The Actor In You,” performed the Chinese version of
Cinderella. Some of the interesting differences from our American version is that the
Fairy Godmother is a cow and two doves, there is no ball, but instead a parade in which
Cinderella is the Grand Marshall, and because Chinese women would bind their feet,
the Prince presented Cinderella with a regular pair of walking shoes which meant much
more than a glass slipper.

Two new classes will be introduced to our program this WinterISpring session. They
include ‘Fly Casting’, which will provide the beginning student with a basic
understanding of fly casting mechanics with the opportunity to practice these skills. The
instructor has been practicing the sport for 48 years. He is from Pinedale, Wyoming, an
area that produces the headwaters of a multitude of outstanding trout-producing
streams that include the renowned Green and New Fork Rivers. Another new class is
“Spanish for Children.’’ While Spanish children are busy learning English, this class will
provide English-speaking children the opportunity to learn the wonderful language of
Spanish.
DAYTRIPPERS
A full day ‘South of the Border’ is scheduled for November 6’h with stops at Ensenada
City Rockettes at Universal Studios, the ‘Glory of Christmas’ Nativity Presentation at the
all-glass Crystal Cathedral and the Newport Harbor ‘Cruise of Lights’. The annual trip
to the popular Tournament of Roses Parade has sold out. Over eighty (80) parade
goers will have excellent seats reserved for them along Colorado Boulevard for the
parade ‘Celebration 2000: Visions of the Future’ presentation.

ADULT SPORTS
All programs will conclude within three weeks and registration for the 2000 season
begins in January. Games for the 2000 season will start in March of 2000. The
program experienced an increase of two hundred spectators and one hundred
participants joining teams throughout the season. I would like to commend the Adult
Sports staff for doing a great job this season. We are in the process of formulating new
A.S.A. softball tournaments, 3 on 3 basketball tournaments, and soccer tournaments to
run in the near future.
Tami Mason, Senior Recreation Leader, just recently graduated from the Palomar
College Police Academy. Congratulations to Tami!
