SENIORS In and Around 'Your Carlsbad Senior Center' 0 A representative from the Deaf and Disabled Telecommunication Program advised a group of seniors on November 16'h how to apply for free specialized telephone equipment; people who are hard of hearing, deaf, have a speech impairment or suffer from low vision or blindness qualify for this benefit. The speaker herself was deaf and she brought in an array of telephone set-ups to assist folks whose impairment inhibits their ability to use the phone. A real-time captioner and sign language interpreter assisted. Those attending were grateful for the knowledge! 0 An expert explained to an overflowing crowd on November 18 how to relieve nagging arthritis pain by using natural remedies. The information was helpful and to cover other topics. A real hit with the crowd! F quite beneficial and a lot of questions were asked. This person will be invited back EXHIBIT 1 04 The Regional Pharmacy Supervisor for Costco, Dr. Gerald Graf, spoke to a large crowd November 18 on how to not let an interaction of medications harm or kill you. Many were familiar with Dr. Graf, as he has radio and television shows. He also touched on issues of pricing, over-the-counter supplements, and generic medications. The audience appeared to enjoy his presentation and there were a lot of questions asked. He will definitely be asked back again. SENIOR SAFARI Saturday, November 6'h we traveled to the La Jolla Playhouse for 'Sweet Bird of Youth' a theater production by Tennessee Williams. This play was pure enjoyment for those who attended. Wednesday, November 17 we attended the annual mum festival held at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. This is one of the west's largest displays of colorful mums. We rode the monorail, visited all of the new babies and saw the shows. On our way home we stopped at Canterbury Gardens to see the holiday decorations and displays. Tuesday, November 30th was a day filled with tours, trees and tea ... our first stop was Knorr Candle Factory in Del Mar (we even wrapped our own candles to take home). A bit of shopping and lunch at Flower Hill Mall followed by a tour of the new Carlsbad Library was our early afternoon. Our final stop of the day was at Aviara Four Seasons Hotel for High Tea and a view of the gorgeous Christmas trees on display. We are busy signing instructors contracts for the year 2000. As of now we have 48 instructors teaching approximately 300 classes. We are proud of the fact that a number of our most successful instructors have been teaching with us in our instructional class program for more than 10 years. " The latest dance craze has men and women of all ages hitting the dance floor for the first time and repopularizing the dance styles of yesterday. In order to accommodate this popular phase, Swing N' Ballroom will be held the 2"d Sunday of every month giving all the Fred Astaire's and Ginger Rogers' of the world a chance to perfect their skills. AQUATICS One of the best kept secrets of the fading millennium is Santa’s proclivity to cool off with a few laps in our pool the evening of December 24th. In preparation for this annual event, the Swim Complex will be closed Saturday, December 18‘h through Monday, December 20th. The Aquatics Staff will drain the pool in order to repair damaged coping tiles (some water polo players may be getting lumps of coal in their stockings) and to improve water quality (Santa’s little red nose is sensitive). These projects, plus the completion of a lengthy list of preventative and aesthetic maintenance tasks, will greatly increase client satisfaction with this facility (and it never hurts to butter up Saint Nick). Carlsbad High School programs are going strong at the Swim Complex. The Physical Education Aquatics classes bring to the water approximately 40 students on alternating mornings. Reigning CIF Champion Varsity and Junior Varsity girls water polo has taken over the pool from their male counterparts every afternoon and evening. In order to keep the polo players off their toes, A C.H.S. Marine Biology teacher is running a SCUBA class in the deep end. In addition, Aquatics has been approached for pool space by the C.H.S cross country team and the girl’s water polo team from La Costa Canyon H.S. Five months in a row. Yes, each month from April through August 1999 was at least 4 degrees colder than normal. Did this have an effect on Swim Complex attendance? See what you think. ..April - August attendance figures for recreation swim, swim lessons, Masters; 1998 vs. 1999: APRIL - AUGUST 1998 APRIL -AUGUST 1999 LESSONS 5358 18,509 12,663 5,378 19,691 1 1,215 MASTERS REC & LAP LESSONS MASTERS REC & LAP Carlsbad Aquatics is now the proud owner of what very well may be the “World’s Safest 3M Diving Standard”. Safety netting has been laced between the railings and a 3 inch thick padded surface has been installed beneath the entire apparatus. Looking for a fresh spot to eat your leftover turkey sandwich lunch? Check out the three new picnic tables now making their home at the Swim Complex. These genuine simulated wood octagon beauties are almost too slick to eat off of; but go ahead. Can’t make lunch? Join us at dusk. The view to the west has been breath taking, the sun slowly setting while the new Carlsbad High School Gymnasium slowly rises. Live entertainment is offered in the form of scurrying Aquatics staff frantically attempting to keep the pool and facility clear of gymnasium construction dust, mud and debris. Boldly moving into the early 199O’s, the Swim Complex now has e-mail and Internet service. We have also been live on the new “Class” registration. program since October 1’‘. Clients are now issued barcode photo identification cards when a swim pass is purchased. This new card scanning system is creating a wealth of practical information we can use to better serve the public (and photos of the 5:30 AM clients are really entertaining). CALAVERA HILLS PARK November at Calavera was very busy. There was much outside activity because of the I- beautiful weather. There were no rainouts this fall so the fields were used extensively. December is floor resurfacing month. The activity room will be closed for one week. The gymnasium will be closed for two weeks. This will be during the two week school break, December 20th through January 1, 2000. The wooden floors will be sanded and varnished and allowed to cure. DAYTRIPPERS Holiday excursions in December include the spectacular Radio City Rockettes at Universal Studios, the ‘Glory of Christmas’ Nativity Presentation at the all-glass Crystal Cathedral and the Newport Harbor ‘Cruise of Lights’. The annual trip to the popular Tournament of Roses Parade has sold out. Over eighty (80) parade goers will have excellent seats reserved for them along Colorado Boulevard for the parade ‘Celebration 2000: Visions of the Future’ presentation. ADULT SPORTS The 1999 adult softball season concluded on November 1 5‘h with an end of season tournament for all divisions. The basketball season will end on December 8 th and the soccer season on December 20th. All leagues have been very interesting and fun for all participants. We have had several phone calls stating that the leagues were well coordinated. We are gearing up for the 2000 season with registration packets set to be like to congratulate the adult sports staff for a terrific job this season. ‘, mailed the second week of December. We anticipate an increase in all sports. I would t PARKS A City Council appointed committee has been working diligently to address street tree issues in the olde Carlsbad (northwest quadrant) area.
