The campers enjoyed holiday arts & crafts, large group games, and field trips. They even participated in the celebration of the new millennium by ringing in the New Year (Paris time) with sparkling apple cider. Highlights of the two weeks included field trips to Disneyland and Sea Word. /= SENIORS The Holiday season has been an especially busy time at the Senior Center. December 8'h marked the 10 year anniversary for the Senior Center. What a celebration! The day was highlighted with a speech by Pam Smith, Director of the AIS. We hope you were able to visit us on this very special occasion. Marsha and all of her elves prepared and delivered delicious holiday meals to homebound seniors on Christmas Day. This was in addition to hosting several large crowds for special holiday meals in the dining room that entire week. The week prior to New Years was also commemorated as the center hosted the Jerry Michelsen Trio who gave a wonderful performance. Everyone enjoyed a toast of sparkling apple cider , complete with hats and whistles! 1 . t Terry Talbot, long time kitchen assistant, was nominated and selected as the Part-time Employee of the Year in the Recreation Department. The award was presented at the Annual Parks & Recreation Commission Holiday Awards Dinner. Terry will soon be 85 years young and puts in as many hours as any of her juniors, who would have a hard time keeping up with her. Congratulations Terry! The Senior Center would like to welcome two new staff members to the family. Pat Piper is our first female Van Driver and Richard Lindstrom has joined the Facility Attendants. The Senior Safari group was busy over the holidays, traveling to see the glory of Christmas, a tour of the beautifully decorated Ritz Carlton, The Radio City Rockette’s and the Newport Holiday Boat Parade. All the trips were a great celebrate the Holidays! AQUATICS The Swim Complex begins the new millennium feeling a little blue. The walls are blue. The doors are blue. The gates are blue. The trim is blue. I know what you are thinking, but don’t worry. To keep things from getting aesthetically mundane we made certain to use two entirely different shades of blue. Not only is the new look a great improvement over the peeling, blistering, mismatched shades of beige and stark white we covered up, but our facility now fills a small but important niche heretofore ignored in Carlsbad. Now renegade Dodger fans have a place to camouflage themselves. c With such an abundance of blue surrounding us as it is, we have taken an important step in preventing our patrons from turning that same color. A shiny new domestic hot water heater (we looked at imported hot water heaters, but the tariffs were too high) is sitting on the pool deck just waiting for a chance to ingest 100 gallons of water, heat it with flaming gas, and then regurgitate it for the showering pleasure of our patrons. The current water heater, which is a vintage 1981 model, is off to the water heater graveyard sometime next week (unless the Carlsbad Historical Society wants it). The extreme and growing shortage of qualified lifeguards and swim instructors is one of the greatest challenges to quality programming that Aquatics faces. In light of this fact, the Aquatics Supervisor will be instructing an American Red Cross “Lifeguard Training Instructor” course beginning January 22, 2000. Hopefully the graduates of this 32 hour endeavor will go forth to train hundreds of desperately needed lifeguards for San Diego County. An American Red Cross “Water Safety Instructor” Course is scheduled for the Spring. The Aquatics Specialist and Senior Instructor Lifeguards will partner with Lifeguard Instructors from the City of Oceanside to teach the 2000 Lifeguard Academy over the next several months. By proactively drawing participants into these courses, tuning up our pay structure and offering a highly professional work environment, we hope to draw the cream of the crop into our outstanding staff. ENRICHMENT CLASSES After what seems to have been a very hectic, and much too brief a break between the Holidays raring to bring in the New Year with a bang! Two of our new classes being offered include Club Clay, a class where children will learn just what clay is, where is comes from and how we make so many wonderful things with it. Swing N’ Ballroom will give all those who love to dance a - and the beginning of our new WinterKpring session the Enrichment Classes are ready and 2 E8 . I chance to trip the light fantastic on Sunday afternoons and show off their skills in Swing, Ballroom, Latin and other social dances. Of course some of the classes that have been old favorites in the community for years are back again and we anticipate them being more popular than ever. If you didn’t get a chance to attend the Holiday Commission Dinner, we honored some of the outstanding part time employees in or Recreation Department. When you call Harding Community Center to register for a special event or a class, there is a good chance you will be working with Kathy Crouthamel, (one of our honorees), and see first hand what customer service is all about.
