Commissioners Report - May, 2000 ,- May 15,2000 TO: PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION FROM: Recreation Supervisor I COMMISSIONER'S REPORT FOR MAY 2000 SPECIAL EVENTS On April 22nd the Recreation Department hosted the Annual Spring Egg Hunts at Calavera, Stagecoach and Holiday Park. An estimated 6,000 families took part in one of the most suc- cessful Egg Hunts ever held. The Recreation Department would like to send a special thank you to the Coldwell Banker Real Estate agents from Carlsbad and Encinitas offices. A total of 78 volunteers from both offices helped assist with this year's event. The Stay n' Play program is once again coming to its annual close. Some closing highlights will include, the Cultural Festival, a trip to Disneyland, and the always popular year-end dance. - Special Events staff is beginning to gear up for the annual Community Sale at Holiday Park on June IOth. 1999's event drew 100 vendors and over 2,000 shoppers. YOUTH SPORTS On Saturday, April l!jth, the Youth Sports section participated in a joint North County Track Meet, which included the cities of Vista and Escondido. Over two hundred children from around North County participated in a variety of events; qualifying kids will move on to the County meet, which will be held May 13'h in Poway. CLEAN SWEEP April 2gth was the date of this year's Carlsbad Clean Sweep event. This joint effort with Carls- bad Youth Baseball brought out six hundred players, coaches and parents to help clean up a variety of sites. Projects included beach clean-ups at Ocean Street and Tamarack, weeding at Calavera Hills Community Center, cleaning the solar panels and weeding at the Swim Com- plex and a major clean up at the Pine School site. After the clean up was done, the Recreation staff served hotdogs, chips and sodas to the hungry volunteers. Ralph's Grocery store donated approximately 1,000 hot dogs and buns. The Clean Sweep project helps to raise funds for Carlsbad Youth Baseball and the Recreation - Department Opportunity Grants Scholarship program. 1 HARDING CENTER-FACILITIES SECTION - The Harding Facilities office and staff have been busy scheduling many spring and summer events. During April, the facility section took in over $6,000 in revenue. The Harding Community Center, Heritage Hall, and Magee Park continue to be the most popular reservation sites in Carlsbad. BALLFIELD MAINTENANCE SECTION The Recreation Department began using the new automated Control Link Lighting System for the majority of the ballfields in Carlsbad beginning April of this year. This new system will save money in lighting costs as well as being more convenient for all groups using the ballfields. The Recreation Department and all user groups are working together to assure the system works well. The ballfield crews continue to do a great job in preparing the infields. The Adult Sports leagues are at their mid-point and complaints about the field conditions are at a minimum. WAY TO GO GUYS! AQUATICS The United States Postal Service is preparing for their highest volume week of the year, and your mother has nothing to do with it! I am referring to the impending Carlsbad resident only swim lesson registration mail-in period. This year the envelope avalanche will run from May 1 Oth until May 1 6'h. Already the back brace manufacturers and vendors, along with deep heat- .- ing rub conglomerates, are overflowing from revenue generated by sales to pensive postal carriers. Meanwhile, back at the Swim Complex, the Aquatics staff calmly awaits the onslaught. Oh we realize that not all of us will survive. Some will fall victim to anemia due to paper cut blood loss; a few of us may be trapped under fallen piles of mail for days at a time with no food or water. There is also the possibility of being overcome by a Seinfeldian envelope adhesive tox- icity. It is hard to explain the internal forces that allow a City of Carlsbad Aquatics employee to survive under these conditions. It's not a job.. .it's a calling! Mail-in registration will cover lessons taught during the first half of the summer. Openings not filled through mail-in may be snapped up by residents during a phone in registration period the weekend of June 3rd and 4'h. Beginning June 7", non-residents and residents may register by phone or in person at the Swim Complex, Calavera, Harding, or Stagecoach (the option to register for swim lessons at the community centers is new this year, compliments of willing and ever-helpful staff at each site, as well as the new CLASS registration system). The Swim Complex will host numerous special activities and events in May. The Avocado League swim team prelims will be held Wednesday, May IOth from 11 :00 to 6:30 followed by - the finals on Saturday, May 13'h from 6:30 to 2:OO. Carlsbad High School Swim Team will take on Fallbrook High School the afternoon of May 5ith at approximately 3:OO pm. The State of California Lifeguards will use the Swim Complex to hold Summer 2000 Junior Lifeguard try- outs on Sunday, May 14 at 8:30 am. 2 / DAYTRIPPERS Thirty Daytrippers enjoyed the April excursions to Anza Borrego desert and the “Glory of Easter” performance at the Crystal Cathedral in Los Angeles. Upcoming trips include the Huntington Library/Gardens and Ensenada, with dinner in Rosarito Beach. SENIORS In and Around ‘Your Carlsbad Senior Center’ A large crowd of people welcomed retired UCSD professor and well-known genealogist, Ernie Mor, on April 6th. Mr. Mort spoke about researching your family tree and the various ways to access information. It was a very interactive seminar and several people expressed an inter- est in seeing a genealogy session every month. A staff member is currently looking into that possibility. Fifteen lovely ladies donned their hats and gloves to attend the April 12‘h “Friendship Tea.” A grand time was had by all as they sipped English tea, enjoyed delicious sandwiches made by the Nutrition staff, and nibbled at homemade scones prepared by Hazel Whittaker, co-hostess of this event. We sincerely hope that this affair remains a tradition for years to come! The executive director of “Hospice of the North Coast” spoke with a group of seniors on April tened and asked several questions about this sensitive topic, and most people in attendance said that they had learned a great deal of valuable information. .- 20th about home hospice care, an alternative for the terminally ill. The interested crowd lis- Dr. Kathleen Novak explained the philosophy behind “holistic” health care to a group on April 25th. She mentioned that appropriate health care involves both traditional and alternative remedies and that both could co-exist perfectly well. The audience seemed pleased with the information. SENIOR SAFARI Sunday, April 2nd, we were treated to a wonderful production of “An American Daughter” at the North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach. Coffee and cookies were served during our intermission break, a nice way to spend a Sunday. April 6th was “Nature Day” in Carlsbad and was a great treat for all participants. We visited the fish hatchery, the Buena Vista Lagoon for a lecture and tour, lunch at the Soup Plantation, and then on to Aqua Farm for a tour of the facility. A wonderful catered lunch was served prior to post time at our daylong adventure to the Santa Anita Race Track. April 20th was our day at the races with a handicapper ready to assist us with betting, and the first race of the day being named for our Carlsbad Seniors. Two of our - ladies even got to pose for pictures with the winning horse after the race. April 27th and a day at the Welk Resort for “A Chorus Line” was possibly one of the best pro- ductions we have seen. The buffet luncheon was, as usual, a spectacular feast, followed by a bit of shopping before the performance began. A great day was had by all. 0 1.0 3 May promises to be a very busy month with the Ramona Pageant, A Coastal Tour of California (6 days/5 nights), Music to Remember, sounds of the best of the big bands, and our second trip to the Palm Springs Follies! The adult softball program has been a plus since the opening of the two new softball fields at Poinsettia Park, and teams have been praising the new fields. The season is in its eighth week and we are gearing up for post-season play with all teams qualifying for post season. We have had an increase of spectators and an addition of five new participants per week. The basketball sea- son is in post-season play and with new teams added into the leagues we have generated more interest. We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a 3 on 3 basketball tourna- ment at the beach during the Seaside Ceiebration during the Carlsbad Triathlon weekend. STAGECOACH COMMUNITY PARK A new program, adult badminton on Wednesday nights, has been popular with over thirty-five participants each week. The La Costa Youth Organization baseball/softball league has almost completed their regular season games and is preparing for post-season play. The Racy La- dies running group, which is a Recreation Department sponsored activity, has been growing in numbers this past year. There are now twenty-four Racy Ladies, including a male runner who often runs with the ladies. Many of the group members compete in various racing events throughout the county. - POINSETTIA PARK The two new baseball fields are in constant use by Carlsbad Youth Baseball, Carlsbad Softball Association, La Costa Youth Organization, and City adult softball leagues. The North County Men's Senior Baseball League has enjoyed using field # 1 on Sunday nights. A portion of the picnic area can be reserved for family and company picnics by contacting the staff at Stage- coach Community Center. Poinsettia Park is a popular spot for picnics. ENRICHMENT CLASSES The instructors and children in our Ballet and Tap & Jazz dance programs are again preparing for another Dance Recital in June. For the past 4 years, instructor Linda Wilkerson's dance recital proceeds have gone to benefit the Pediatric Arts Foundation. The target program this year is Camp Laurel, where the underprivileged children with AIDS can attend camp activities in a supportive and outdoor environment. Her recital will be held June 16th and 1 7th at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center. Our other dance program, with instructor Michelle Alspaw, is held at the California Center for Performing Arts in Escondido in order to accommodate the overwhelming demand for seats. Her recital will be held June 3". We would like to invite you to attend either recital as our guests. You will be amazed at the hard work that goes into these productions and the talent that is showcased. I know that the children would love to have you! Please call Betsy Kennedy at 602-7522 for tickets and further information. It is hard to believe that another summer is coming upon us. We have some new and exciting ." programs and camps offered for the kids. Between the sports, specialty classes and crafts, there should be something to keep all of the kids plenty busy. 5 CALAVERA HILLS PARK Calavera Hills Park had an excellent April. The facility was booming with activity with income on rentals reaching $2,243.36. The biggest event was the Spring Egg Hunt, which attracted approximately 1,000 participants. May is looking very promising for an increase in picnic rent- als due to our excellent weather conditions. We have already received a great deal of interest in these first few days in May! AGUA HEDIONDA LAGOON Despite the marginal weather so far, the sale of lagoon permits is up 20% from May lst of the previous year. Due to he dredging of the inner lagoon in 1999 by SDG&E (the first time since the lagoon was created in 1954), and subsequent replanting of aquatic plants, has enhanced the boating, fishing and bird watching that are enjoyed there. Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 1 Oth, from 8:30am to noon, and join us at the foot of Bayshore Drive for our Annual Lagoon Cleanup. There will be tasty refreshments, friendly folks and much appreciation for your help! ROBIN BETTIN I c: Recreation Director City Manager Assistant City Manager All Department Heads 6
