ITEM EXPLANATION: The Recreation Department has received z letter from the United States Senator Barbara Boxer commending our efforts with’the Spring Dance Recital held June 16 & 17, 2000. In particular, Senator Boxer expressed her admiration for the departments work to raise funds for children with HIV / AIDS through the donation of proceeds from the special event which spotlights students from the Recreation Department’s tap, ballet, jazz, and lyrical dance classes. I, 1 U “That’s Dancin”’ and sched- uled for June 16 and 17, will spotlight students from the department’s tap, ballet, jazz and lyrical dance classes. “Last year we raised $3,000, and we hope to top that this year,” said dance class instructor Linda Wilk- erson, who has been involved with the Pediatric AIDS Foundation since 1986 in both Carlsbad and Los Ange- les. “My students now have a better understanding of AIDS. Two years ago, Wilker- son said, a young Orange County girl named Lauren who tested positive for HIV following open heart surgery as an infant attended the an- nual recital. “After the (students) met her, they made her a basket filled with fun things for a 12-year-old,” Wilkerson said. “And some went with her to SeaWorld.” Twelve-year-old Megan Landis was one of the stu- dents who met Lauren. . * c - ea g some clis- bt,” Dunn wve been yxJn$ tort k., to MC- {mer Ju- sd some- lid Navy > PURPOSE Continued from El “She was just Uke one of us, and I knew that I could not get AIDS from giving her a hug,” Megan said. “Performin at the recital means so muc a more knowing that we are helping someone.” Added Kathy Fulrner, who along with her 11-year-old daughter, Kimberly, met Law ren and her parents at the recital: “The recital is very re- warding for the girls. We all went to church the next day. What a great family they are.” Money raised at the recital from ticket sales, a raffle and bake sales will be used to send children with HIV or AIDS to Camp Laurel, a free summer camp in Los Angeles that is open to children, 6 to 16, from anywhere in the nation. “We’re also collecting items that many of the children need durln camp,” Wilkerson said. W ifi( erson said she’s encour- aging peo le to bring donated items to t g e recital, including sleeping bags, bath or beach towels and sweaters or sweat shirts, new or used and in good condition. She said check dona- tions can be made out to Camp Laurel. The recital and benefit will be held at 7 p.m. June 16 and at 2 p.m. June 17 at the Carlsbad Community Cultural Arts Cen- ter, 3557 Monroe St. Tax-de- ductible tickets, at $6 each, can be purchased in advance at Harding Recreation, 3096 Hwd- in St., or at the door, although Wi % erson said last year‘s recital sold out prior to each perform- ance.
