COMMISSIONER’S REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2000
ADULT SPORTS
During the month of December 2000 all the sports seasons ended. We closed out the
season with an end of the season tournament. During this time we were also preparing
for our Spring 2001 season. The Adult Sports Office is currently evaluating this past
season in order to enhance the leagues for our participants. Registration for softball will
begin January 22 through February 9, 2001; soccer registration begins on February 5
through February 23, 2001, and basketball registration begins on January 15 through
February 2, 2001. We expect an increase in the number of teams for the upcoming
season. - YOUTH BASKETBALL
Holiday break is over and Youth Basketball is back in play! No breaks until champion-
ship games, which are scheduled for February 27 and March 3. The County SCMAF
Tournament will be held on March 17 & 18. Both Calavera and Stagecoach facilities will
be used, along with facilities in Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido.
The 10th Annual Youth (co-ed) Baseball Clinic will be January 8 - 12, 2001; more than
60 kids have registered so far. 2001 should be another successful year!
CALAVERA
Calavera Hills Park had a productive December, which included a teen dance, two soc-
cer tournaments, youth basketball practices and games, plus a variety of classes to fin-
ish off the fall programs. Patron attendance increased to an all time December high of
20,892. The total would have been higher but the gymnasium and activity room were
closed for the annual resurfacing the last two weeks of the month. The resurfacing went
well and now the gymnasium and activity room are ready for another year of intense
use. Field 3 was closed until Jan. 8 in order to give the turf a much-needed rest and to
allow time for its regular maintenance.
January also marks the start of our winterlspring session and we anticipate a busy
month. Also, there will be in-house CPR and First-Aid training on 01/06/01 and
01/13/01, located at the Safety Center from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The highly trained staff - members from our Swim Complex will be the instructors at these training sessions.

c The staff at Calavera would also like to welcome Derek Denkers who was recently hired
as Recreation Specialist. Derek previously worked as a Recreation Specialist both at
the City of Chino Hills, and at the City of Rancho Cucamonga, and as a Recreation
Leader at the City of Corona. Some of his responsibilities included working with the af-
ter-school “Kids Club,” summer camps, lifeguarding, various sports programs, and work-
ing in the community centers. Derek’s varied background in working with children,
as well as program coordination will be a valuable asset to our staff and we ex-
tend a HEARTY WELCOME!
ENRICHMENT CLASSES
“Thank You” to all of the Recreation staff who helped with the annual Parks and Rec-
reation Commission Holiday Dinner. I think that all 100 or so who attended will agree
that the evening was far more festive than ever. The reception, held on the Senior Cen-
ter patio, which was decorated with hundreds of beautifully lit festive lights, and dozens
of poinsettias. The chilly night air was even warmed by overhead heaters, but to top off
the holiday spirit, we were even able to borrow Santa’s sleigh! The only thing lacking
was a dusting of snowflakes!
-
Conaratulations to all of our part time staff who received awards for “Employee of the
Year“ in their respective categories. Each one of these staff members were truly de-
serving of the honor.
Dance Instructor, Linda Wilkerson held an amazing Dance-A-Thon at the Harding Cen-
ter Recreation Hall for a very special little girl who is going to need heart surgery. Linda
raised over $4,000 to help pay for the family’s medical bills.
With the New Year upon us, and our WinterISpring session about to begin, we have
been busy preparing our annual contracts with all of the instructors who teach our
classes. To date, 40 contracts have been signed, with at least another 10 to go!!
HARDING CENTER FACILITIES AND BALLFIELD STAFF
If you go into one of the local Carlsbad taverns you may come across the California
Lotto game, “Hot Spot”, but during the months of October, November, and December it
seems the Harding Center Auditorium, Recreation Hall and Heritage Hall were the com-
munity “Hot Spots!” From October 7* through December 23rd (12 Saturdays), these
three facilities were utilized by 17 private parties, which generated over $5,500 in reve-
nue. Each user group immensely enjoyed their events, with a great deal of credit going
to the recreation part-time staff who worked these parties - Mark Lopez, Robert Marti-
nez, Gilbert Morales, Jose Estrada and Brian O’Grady. Thank you all for your - dedication and support. 020

- Additionally, staff has taken it upon themselves to upgrade the facilities with the help, trust and confidence of Greg Clavier of the Building Maintenance Dept. During the last
two weeks of December, ballfield and facility staff traded their ballfield boots and facility
back braces to paint the interior of Heritage Hall, the entire exterior of the Scout House
facility, and the foyer area of the Auditorium. Not only did staff do a fantastic job, they
saved the City a tremendous amount of money, besides freeing up time for Building
Maintenance staff to perform other duties. Kudos to John Wilson, Manny Villalta Sr.,
Manny Villalta Jr., Jaime Estrada, Robert T. Martinez, Jose Estrada and lead man
Joey Silva. Way to go guys!
We would also like to extend a hearty welcome to our newest full-time staff mem-
ber, Brian O’Grady, who was hired as a Recreation Specialist in the Facilities / Special-
ist Operations department. Brian began his career with the Recreation Department -
nearly 10 years ago as a part-time employee and has been a tremendous asset in the
vast array of jobs that he has performed through the years. We are all grateful for
Brian’s perseverance and determination!
POINSETTIA COMMUNITY PARK
The Carlsbad Soccer Club and Lightning Soccer Club held youth soccer tournaments in
December at Poinsettia Park. A youth baseball camp was also conducted at the park.

cember 5* about how to handle depression and grief during the holidays. It was a very
successful presentation as many of the people acknowledge their ongoing grief and lis-
tened as the professionals offered tips and advice. This was a seminar that needed to
be done and those in attendance were extremely gratified.
- Two social workers from Hospice of the North Coast spoke to a group of seniors on De-
The holiday spirit was ushered into the Senior Center on December 7* as the Hawaiian
Dance class put on a concert of rhythmic Hawaiian dances. This holiday program was
festive and quite enjoyable. A beautiful beginning to a jolly month! -. ,- ..
The mood was kept alive by the annual holiday concert by the Choraleers singing group.
The group sang uplifting renditions of yuletide classics and thrilled the 80+ people in the
audience.
A dietician from Kaiser Permanente addressed a curious group of seniors by advising
them how to survive holiday dining without gaining weight. This December 19* presen-
tation was just what those in the audience wanted and there were many questions
asked. Refreshments (bagels, non-fat muffins, coffee and juice) were provided. This
may become a yearly event!
