“Play Ball!’’ That was the indication of the
ADULT SPORTS
start of the Adult Softball and Basketball
Fall season, during the week of August
27th, 2001. The Adult Sports concluded I I it’s practice games for all 124 teams that
were accepted to participate in our Fall
Season.
Teams will receive one practice game, ten league games, and a post-season tournament for the top
four teams in each division. During the season the Adult Sports Division is constantly communicating
with teams to ensure ttiat they have fun and enjoyable experience. With the addition of our game
supervisors, we are able to promote customer service and sportsmanship each and every night. Adult
Sports Specialist, Steve Herrera, attended the Margarita Official Association’s meeting to discuss and
educate all officials who officiate in our leagues. He shared our vision of Sportsmanship and fair play
along with our league specific rules and regulations. Our attendance was applauded by the association
and they expressed their wish to the City of Carlsbart to share its sportsmanship program with other
cities. We were the only city to actually meet with all Ifficials and to promote sportsmanship.
. Addtionally, we recieved eighty phone calls from individuals in the community that did not have teams to
play on but wanted to participate in our sport leagues. We were able to place them onto teams that
were in need of players which helped these new Carlsbad citizens to meet new friends and participate
in our leagues.

ENRICHMENT CLASSES
August is always a busy time as camps and summer activities wind down and registration for fall classes
begins. Along with the registration for all of the Fall classes, it is also open registration for our popular
dance program. Hundred of registrations have been arriving daily with hopeful expectation of gaining a
spot in one of the classes. For those interested in decorating their homes for the holidays we are
introducing a new class, Fabulous Fall Planters, to help you create beautiful floral decorations to spruce
up your front door for the Fall holidays or a bouquet where you can create your own living mixed plant
design for the centerpiece at your festive gatherings.
Every year we are blessed with new talented instructors joining our staff. We have 52 contracted with us
now. Of those 52 instructors, 13 have been with us for 10 or more years. I guess they like it here!
Fun and adventurous camps continued throughout our facilities and Parks in the month of August.
Highlights included Cooking Camp, Voyagers Camp, Kidz Club Camp and Rocketry/Space Camp to
name just a few! - 4 large variety of Preschool and Enrichment Classes will begin the week of September including
great new classes: Aerobics for Everybody, Singing for Teens and Tile Painting to name a few.

FAMILY NIGHT IN THE PARK
The Carlsbad Recreation Department hosted its
second annual Family Night in the Park on August
25-26. The event attracted enough tents to cover
two entire ballfields with a record setting attendance
of 680 campers. The afternoon kicked off with an
old fashioned BBQ, carnival games, crafts, science
experiments and activities such as a rock climbing
wall and a Velcro jump. Many families enjoyed the
challenging activities and exciting craft experiments.
After dinner, the carnival zone and BBQ areas were
cleared and everyone gathered in the gym for a
magic show and raffle. The evening ended with an
outdoor movie in surround sound displayed on the
e>(terior of the gymnasium's wall. When the sun came up the next morning, staff was ready and waiting
to help serve a continentia1 breakfast. As we bid farewell to all who joined the festivities, an overwhelm-
ing amount of thanks and compliments were given to the Family Night in the Park staff.

Field conditions were excellent! Youth organizations have started fall practices on most City-owned
fields. Staff continues to work with the youth organizations’ representatives to coordinate light
schedules for evening field use.
STAY N PLAY
The Stay n Play program will be starting on September I 8’h and our Recreation staff is eager to kick it
off. It’s another year of fun and learning including tutoring and field trips. However, most importantly,
it‘s another opportunity to mentor and make a significant difference in children’s lives.
