DATE: 09/15/03 STAFF: CALARCO TITLE : RECEIPT OF DONATION INFO nn ACTION RECOMMENDED ACTION: Receive donation and recommend acceptance by City Council. ITEM EXPLANATION: On July 16, 2003, the City received a donation of artifacts and memorabilia related to actor Leo Carrillo and Rancho de los Quiotes. The donation was a generous gift of Mr. And Mrs. Clay Bartels of Studio City, CA. The Bartels wrote in an email to Alan and Joan Kindle: "We're ready to go and the hats will be a gift to the 'Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park'. After all we have had the joy and pleasure for over forty years each time we looked and remembered seeing Leo wearing the hats. It's time they go back home again." The Bartels have been working with Joan Kindle and the Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc., on this donation since 1995. The Recreation Department wishes to gratefully acknowledge their efforts. Without their dedicated persistence, this donation would simply not have been possible. The following items were received by the Carrillo Ranch Archives: 1. Stetson Hat - see attached photo of Leo Carrillo (wearing Stetson) and an unidentified man inspecting hay at Los Quiotes - 1940's 2. Yachting Cap/Mariner's Hat - see attached photo of Leo Carrillo (wearing hat) aboard his yacht Thetis in Santa Monica Harbor Using a "High Noon Wild West Auction" guide, Joan Kindle, Volunteer Curator, estimated the value of the donated items at $2,000. The estimated value was based on similar items offered at auction in 1992. EXHIBITS: 1. Letter to Mr. And Mrs. Clay Bartels dated August 1, 2003 2. Thanks in large part to gifts such as yours, the City will be better able to bring the wonderful history of Carrillo Ranch alive to the visiting public. I hope you enjoyed your tour of the ranch during your recent visit to Carlsbad. Phase II improvements have almost been completed, and we are excited about the Grand Opening event on Saturday, August 16, 2003. I hope that you will be able to attend so I may have the opportunity to meet and thank you personally. Your donated hats will be proudly displayed at the Grand Opening as part of an artifact and memorabilia exhibit organized by the City. I cannot help but think that Leo would be both honored and pleased to see his hats displayed for visitors to enjoy for many years to come. Once again thank you very much for your generous donation, and for your personal dedication to keeping the memory of Leo and his rancho alive.
