MEMORIAL DEDICATION PROGRAM
ACTION
To approve the proposed memorial program for dedicated trees and benches in City parks and
designate Hosp Grove, La Costa Canyon Park and Veterans Memorial Park as locations for
these memorials.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
The Parks and Recreation Commission previously had directed staff to research methods and
provide a recommended program for the acceptance of memorial gifts, specifically trees and
benches.
The current practice of accepting trees and plaques that have been planted at various park sites
is beginning to create an unplanned appearance at our parks. Each park is master planned and
designed for specific functions. We are finding that the addition of these new trees and their
associated plaques detracts from the overall look of the particular park. In addition, the
challenge of keeping these trees healthy and viable in active parks is an on-going maintenance
task.
Staff has researched memorial dedication programs from many different agencies. Our research
has led to the following recommended program. The City of Carlsbad will accept memorial trees
or benches for designated parks. The cost of trees shall be as follows: 15 gallon containers at
$200, 24” box containers at $350, 36” box containers at $650, and 48” box containers at $1,000.
The park bench (city standard model) will be at a cost of $850. The cost of these items includes
procurement, supplies and installation. Bonze plaques, if desired, are limited to 8” x 5” size and
are the responsibility of the donor. Location of trees benches and wording on plaques is subject
to the approval of the Public Works Director or his/her designee. The donated trees will be
planted at La Costa Canyon Park, Hosp Grove Park, and the future Veterans Memorial Park.
Park bench locations will be as approved by the Public Works Director or his/her designee
Each donation will be recognized by the issuance of a card acknowledging the donor and the
honoree. When dedicated trees are planted the information will be documented in the City’s tree
inventory.
