In February the CIT’s embarked on a pizza making adventure, visiting the
Carlsbad Pat & Oscar’s Restaurant, to explore the daily operations of manag-
ing a restaurant and pizza kitchen. The tour was led by a friendly Pat & Oscar’s
employee, who exposed the CIT’s to the various job opportunities at the res-
taurant and educated them on some of the restaurant’s history. The highlight of
the tour came when it was time for the CIT’s to practice their pizza-making

pizza. “I never realized how easy it is to make a pizza ... l think I’d like to work
here when I’m old enough” said CIT participant Ryan Trujillo. The CIT’s walked
away that day with some newly-found job opportunities at Pat & Oscar’s and
some knowledge of restaurant operations, while picking up some new pizza-

ICIT’s learn How to Protect Themselves
Self-defense training can promote self-confidence and self-awareness, and
the CIT’s have had the opportunity to participate in self-defense classes once
a week. Every Thursday the CIT’s join Carol Evans, self-defense instructor,
to learn new defense techniques and partake in self-esteem discussions.
Carol Evans is a representative from Guided Adventures In Nature, an or-
ganization that specializes in fitness training, wilderness survival skills, self-
esteem and self-defense workshops. The CIT’s look forward to the adven-
tures that await each week with Carol, and have enjoyed these growing op-
portunities. Mary Stamper, CIT participant, says, “This is an awesome class,
and I really feel like I’m learning how to defend myself if I needed to. I’ve
even learned how to throw someone off of me if they are on top of me.”

CIT’s Contribute Artwork to local Celebration
In the month of May we were able to participate in the Festejando del
Madrecitas community celebration event, which took place on May
7th. This event celebrated Mother’s Day by showing art work, poems
and stories written by Carlsbad kids, dedicated to their mothers. The
CIT program wrote poems and made paintings to dedicate to our
mothers, thanking them for all they’ve done for us and how much we
lovKP%emJ3ur-aRwork-was displayed at the festival, which took place
at Holiday Park, and many of us took our Mothers to the festival to
surprise them with this special project.
This was a great way for us to show how much we appreciate our
mothers, and we hope this project was as special to our Mother’s as it
was to us.

FLASHBACK
By Megan Eslinger-CIT Coach
The Counselor in Training participants have been involved in a
wide variety of activities over the past few months ranging from
community service events to self-help and personal development
workshops. The CIT’s extended their volunteer services this past
March at the Carlsbad EGGstravaganza, performing a wide
variety of duties which contributed to the success of this event.
February through May brought exciting personal growth
opportunities for the CIT participants, with such activities as Self
Esteem, Self Defense, Yoga, and daily self-awareness and
self-motivation discussions. These discussions open new doors
and help the CIT’s discover the meaning of leadership in their
eyes and identify their own personal mission statements for life. I
have seen some incredible transfognations with the teens and
hope that they will take all they have learned in the program and
apply it to their everyday lives.

CIT’s Take a Seafaring Adventure
Have you ever been to the tunnel at La Jolla Tide Pools? If you have, then you can understand
when we say that it feels like your in a completely different world. On March 8th the CIT Program
visited the Tide Pools for an afternoon of exploration and adventure. With the water freezing and -
the rocks slippery and slimy, simply walking was a challenge, but once we reached the tide tunnel
and the sun pools the difficult walk was worth it. There were all kinds sea life to look at, such as
fish, sea anemones, crabs, sea urchins and more. The exploration was exciting and some of us
ended the day with a daring dip in the freezing cold water, while the rest of us played in the sand.
Overall I think we learned some new things about our coastal waters, and discovered many new
things about the sea life that live there. It was a great day!
