RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Receive a donation of five hundred dollars ($500) cash in support of the September 1,2005
National Public Lands Day-Lake Calavera Clean Up and recommend acceptance by the City
Manager.

ITEM EXPLANATION:
It is the mission of the Carlsbad Recreation Department Citywide Trails Program to provide a
’
trails system that ensures the recreational and leisure needs of Carlsbad residents while
supporting the protection and preservation of open spaces. With that in mind, the Citywide
Trail Volunteer Program supports annual Clean-ups at the City’s Lake Calavera Mitigation site.
In order to reduce the cost to the City and form a partnership with community businesses, a
sponsorship opportunity was created.
The department provided Toyota-Lexus Carlsbad the opportunity to support at a local level,
the larger national donation program that Toyota has supported for several years with the
National Public Lands Day Foundation. The City received a $500 donation from Try “J”
Advertising, marketing division for the Toyota-Lexus dealerships here in Carlsbad. The funds
were used to purchase t-shirts that were given to those who volunteered at the Clean-up.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The cost associated with the sponsorship offset the actual cost of providing this event by $500
that would otherwise be required of the General Fund. The check has been deposited into the
Recreation Trust Fund account #149-4503-5651 under a line item specifically identified for
t ra i Is.
Letters of appreciation have already been sent on behalf of the Recreation Department and
the City of Carlsbad to Try “J” Advertising and Toyota- Lexus Carlsbad.

extend my sincere appreciation to Carlsbad Toyota-Lexus dealerships for
their generous $500 donation in support of this year‘s National Public
Lands Day, being celebrated on Saturday, September 24.
The donation received will greatly assist in the clean-up effort at which
volunteers will be removing trash, invasive plants, and sprucing up the
trails in one of Carlsbad’s largest publicly owned open space areas.
Volunteer efforts on National Public Lands Day, contribute greatly towards
preserving and improving this great open space for all who enjoy nature
and hiking and biking on the trails.
Your partnership with the City in this event enhances the Recreation
Departments strong commitment in supporting our mission of continuing to
create community through people, parks and programs.
