ITEM EXPLANATION:
This year's 25th Triathlon celebration will be held the weekend of July 8th and 9th, and embraces
even further the Department's strategic goal of health and fitness. Held in the beautiful village of
Carlsbad, at Pine Park and Senior Center, the Expo was expanded by combining both the Senior
Health Expo and Seaside Expo. Combining the two events and creating a fun, educational and
active event for all ages from infants to seniors will demonstrate the Department's commitment in
assisting residents with maintaining or obtaining a healthy lifestyle. Opening remarks will be
made by Steve Scott, the US record holder in the mile run and other seminars will be held
including a lecture on healthy lifestyles, childhood obesity and raw foods by world-renowned Dr.
John Zimmerman, N.D. Enrichment class demonstrations, vendors selling healthy products or
providing informational services, free health screenings; interactive play equipment and food will
kick off the weekend.
The Triathlon, which ranks in the World's top 5 Longest Running triathlons and voted one of the
top 3 sprint races in San Diego by Competitor Magazine will be held on Sunday, July 9th. It is a
sprint distance race, consisting of 1K Swim, 25K Bike and 5K Run. The course follows the
coastline of Carlsbad, past scenic beaches, lagoons and wildlife preserve. It boasts a calm
ocean swim, a rolling bike course and a smooth run for the finish. The Carlsbad Triathlon
attracts competitors from all over the state - especially those from San Diego, Orange, Santa
Barbara, and Los Angeles counties, as well as other parts of the nation and world. The event
continues to be one of the safest, fastest and most enjoyable races on the California race
calendar, capping at 1,100 entries.
