ITEM EXPLANATION:
The construction plans for Alga Norte Community Park and Aquatics Center are nearing 100%
completion. The project should be ready for bidding in November 2006 and will likely begin
construction in early Spring 2007. For this meeting, Paul Hobson, the artist for the project, will
be presenting an informational item to the Parks and Recreation Commission on the final public
art concept for the project.
There are four separate components of the final public art concept. These components are:
1. Sports sculptures created using bent steel pipe in the shapes of active sports figures and
to be installed on building walls.
2. Beach towels created using colorful ceramic tile to be installed around the moving river.
3. Stacked beach towel "seating," created using colorful fiberglass and which serve as
benches around the recreation pools.
4. Beach towel banners created using colorful vinyl fabric and to be installed on light poles
and building walls.
The initial public art concept was presented and approved by the Carlsbad Arts Commission.
The next step in the public art approval process was for the concept to be displayed for public
comment, which has now been completed. The only art component that was modified as a result
of public input was the stacked towel concept. Previously, the stacked towels created "towers,"
which would have served as a vertical entry statement. The towers were modified to be the
benches in the final concept, as indicated above.
On August 3, 2006, Paul Hobson presented the final public art concept to the Carlsbad Arts
Commission. The presentation provided an update on the revised art concept that had been
modified to respond to public comment. At that meeting, the Arts Commission recommended
approval to the City Council of the final proposed public artwork components for Alga Norte
Community Park and Aquatics Center.
