TRAILBLAST EVENT
ACTION
RECOMMENDED ACTION :
To accept a staff presentation on the TrailBlast Event.
ITEM EXPLANATION :
In October 2005, the Recreation Department formed the Health & Wellness Committee to
address how the department could improve the promotion of Health & Wellness Citywide. The
focus was to analyze our current programs that relate to a healthy lifestyle and formulate a plan
that would allow staff to establish more activities in the future.
The first TrailBlast Event was a collaboration between the Health & Wellness Committee and
Trails. This free event consisted of four (4) consecutive hikes and included a warm-up and cool-
down exercise lead by a fitness trainer. The Trails were specifically selected to give each
participant a great workout, no matter what their fitness level, while exploring the natural beauty
of the City.
Each participant was given a pedometer to track the number of steps taken during the hikes. On
the final day, which coincided with National Public Lands Day, all participants who had completed
all four consecutive hikes received a T-shirt and other rewards.
The first hike brought out approximately 300 participants. Each week after that averaged 200
participants. An astounding 112 participants completed all 4 hikes.
