DATE: | 2/12/07 STAFF: |STEYAERT SUB-COMMITTEE SKATEPARK REPORT INFO ACTION RECOMMENDED ACTION : Receive a report from staff and the Skate Park Sub-Committee concerning a recommendation to City Council on whether or not to expand the current skate park at the Safety Center. ITEM EXPLANATION : At the 11/20/06 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, staff made a presentation concerning the issue of providing additional skateboarding opportunities in the City. The recommendation from staff at that time was to include a line item in the upcoming Fiscal Year 07- 08 Operating Budget to hire a consultant to provide an in-depth feasibility study including site, skate park facility type, and funding alternatives. The reason for the recommendation was that staff's current work load of projects already underway precluded them from adequately addressing this issue until next fiscal year. To help expedite the process, the Commission created a Sub-Committee to look into the matter. The Commission appointed Commissioner's Craig, Cooper, and Pacheco to this Sub-Committee. Early in the process, the Sub-Committee came to the conclusion that expanding the existing skate park at the Safety Center would be the easiest and most cost effective solution as a first step toward providing additional skating opportunities. In addition, considering the uncertainty of future plans for the Safety Center site, it would be best to recommend temporary skate structures be utilized that could be relocated at a later date if needed (Exhibit 2). As pointed out by staff in previous agenda bills, there is currently a planning effort underway to locate a new public works operations center and police and fire training center at the property around the current skate park. The limits of the proposed public works center and training center are not known at this time although some preliminary planning has taken place (Exhibit 3). Special Projects Director Skip Hammann will present an overview of what is being proposed for the Safety Center site and estimated timeline for the project. If the Commission votes to recommend proceeding with the concept of expanding the current skate park, staff will need to make a presentation to the City Council to determine their interest level in this project.
