DATE: 3/19/07 STAFF: SPICKARD CALIFORNIA PARKS AND RECREATION SOCIETY AWARDS ACTION RECOMMENDED ACTION : Receive information regarding the California Parks and Recreation Society Awards that were accepted by the Carlsbad Recreation Department on March 10, 2007 at the annual California Parks and Recreation conference held in Sacramento, California. ITEM EXPLANATION : At their annual conference, March 7-10, 2007, the California Parks and Recreation Society (C.P.R.S.) honored the Carlsbad Recreation Department by acknowledging the department's efforts in three categories. The California Parks and Recreation Society's Annual Awards Program recognizes excellence among agencies and individuals that publicize, develop, and manage programs, parks and facilities that embody and embrace the core values of the profession, particularly accessibility, service to community, lifelong learning, diversity of experience and environmental stewardship; move the agency toward a stronger position or role within the community, and demonstrate the mission of parks and recreation. Entries are divided and evaluated by population category. Carlsbad competed in the 50,001-100,000 population category. The Carlsbad Recreation Department received the following awards on March 10, 2007: 1. Recreation and Community Service Award in the category of Health and Wellness or Human Development, for the Trail Blast program. Entries were judged on how programs, services or special events improve the physical, mental, emotional or social development and/or health of individuals. Trail Blast is a free fitness program that encourages citizens to g6t fit using Carlsbad's Citywide Trails System. The program was held on four consecutive Saturdays in September 2006, consisting of a session with a personal trainer followed by a brisk walk, run or hike on one of Carlsbad's scenic trails. Nearly 500 participants in total discovered the beauty and value of trails via this innovative, community fitness solution that is free, fits easily into anyone's schedule, encourages social interaction and is available for all ages and fitness levels. 2. Agency Showcase Award in the category of Single Focus Brochure, for Trail Blast Entries were judged on planning/content, creativity/quality, technical excellence, assessment of results and how the core mission areas of parks and recreation were implemented in the project. The Trail Blast brochure, which was completely designed and printed in-house by Recreation Department graphic designers, included a built-in Reward Card that was redeemed by 110 participants who completed all four Trail Blast events. Entries included TV or radio announcements, or informational videos. They were judged on planning/content, creativity/quality, technical excellence, assessment of results and how the core mission areas of parks and recreation were implemented in the project. The Recreation Department created an informational video that promotes the mission, vision and expectations of T.R.U.S.T. Featuring Dave Roberts of the San Diego Padres, the video was created with extensive community involvement from local community organizations, coaches, referees, parents and participants. Awareness of the T.R.U.S.T. program has created a climate of camaraderie and civic pride. Residents know that rude or aggressive conduct will never be tolerated in Carlsbad, which increases their confidence in Recreation programs. Department staff were present at the awards banquet, March 10, 2007, to accept the awards on behalf of the City of Carlsbad's Recreation Department. FISCAL IMPACT: EXHIBITS: 1.
