The Arbor Day Event will feature informational booths from the City's Tree Maintenance Section, SDG&E, and West Coast Arborists; a tree planting demonstration led by City staff; equipment displays; and vouchers from the City for discounted tree purchases at Briggs's Nursery. A total of 100 vouchers will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, beginning at 9:00 am. Proof of Carlsbad residency is required (a current utility bill of the property that will receive the tree, and photo identification of that property's owner/tenant), and there is a limit of one voucher per household. The tree planting demonstration will occur after issuance of the vouchers is completed. "Carlsbad has been nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment in planting and maintaining trees. This event is a great way to involve the community, and make the residents aware of that commitment," comments Public Works Superintendent Kyle Lancaster. Carlsbad has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor day Foundation. Arbor Day was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska. Planting trees reduces the erosion of topsoil by wind and water, cuts heating and cooling costs, moderates the temperature, cleans the air, produces oxygen and provides habitat for wildlife. # # # 13
