RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Receive individual donations of product in support of the March 24, 2007, Carlsbad Love Kids event and
recommend acceptance by the City Council.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
On Saturday, March 24th, the Recreation Department joined with the Carlsbad Village Optimist Club in
hosting the Carlsbad Loves Kids event at Stagecoach Community Park. There was an estimated
attendance of over 1,000 attendees.
This year's event had a variety of activities that included a fun zone, competitions in basketball, football,
golf, and baseball, and entertainment. Kids of all ages had the opportunity to create crafts and get their
faces painted. The main goal of the event, besides bringing the community together in support of our
youth, was to highlight and introduce the Recreation Department's upcoming summer camp programs to
the public. By spotlighting these unique camps, the Department saw a sharp increase in camp
enrollment for this summer.
The Village Optimist Club generously donated $2,000, which covered the cost of prizes, rock wall,
tandem jump, and food. Besides the $2,000 donation from the Village Optimist Club, several other
businesses got involved by generously donating $1,531.00 in raffle prizes making the total value of
donations $3,531.

FISCAL IMPACT:
The cost associated with the donated products for prizes helped offset the actual cost of
providing this special event. Letters of appreciation have already been sent on behalf of the
Recreation Department and the City of Carlsbad to these organizations.
