RECEIPT OF DONATION OF
SOCCER GOAL NETTING FOR AVIARA PARK
INFO
ACTION
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Receive donation and recommend acceptance by the City Manager
ITEM EXPLANATION:
Mr. Niels Norby, President of Carlsbad Lightning Soccer Club has generously donated four
brand new soccer goal nets for use at Aviara Community Park. Lightning regularly uses the fields
at Aviara, and Mr. Norby noticed that the existing nets had large holes in them, making them
difficult to use.
Recently, Lightning hosted the inaugural Carlsbad Cup Soccer Tournament in Carlsbad from
July 20, through July 23,2007. In order to accommodate the 220 teams that participated,
Recreation Department staff worked closely with event organizers to schedule field use for their
games on seven different fields that the Department manages, including those jointly operated
by the Carlsbad Union School District.
Mr. Norby noted that their tournament"... was a big success for our club and we received many
rave reviews on the facilities in Carlsbad. We could not have done this without the City's co-
operation and commitment to our Club. We had over 220 teams from California, Arizona, Nevada
and Hawaii. He went on to say that, "the monies raised from this tournament will allow Lightning
to offer even more in financial assistance to low income families that have children wanting to
play soccer.
The donation of the goal nets was a token of appreciation from the Carlsbad Lightning Soccer
Club for the excellent service and assistance they received that contributed to the overall
success of the Carlsbad Cup Soccer Tournament.
The City of Carlsbad Recreation Department wishes to acknowledge the generosity of Niels
Norby and Lightning Soccer. The new nets will contribute greatly to the public's use and
enjoyment of the fields.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The purchase and donation of the new nets represents a savings of approximately $368 to the
City's general fund.
