RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Receive individual donations of cash and product in support of the Recreation
Department's Opportunity Grants Silent Auction that was held on September 26, 2007 at
The Crossings at Carlsbad and recommend acceptance by the City Council.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
On September 26, 2007, the City of Carlsbad hosted a special Recognition Day in honor of
the opening of The Crossings at Carlsbad. As part of the event, a silent auction was held
to benefit, support, and raise awareness for the Recreation Department's Opportunity
Grants program.
The Opportunity Grants program was designed to contribute to the future growth, well
being and development of Carlsbad's youth through participation in Recreation
Department programs. By awarding opportunity grants to deserving Carlsbad families,
the Recreation Department sought to encourage the development of positive self-esteem
and social responsibility, decrease the occurrence of juvenile crimes and promote overall
physical fitness and health, thereby creating a strong and safe community.
The many generous individuals and companies who contributed to the Opportunity Grants
Silent Auction (Exhibit 1) will enable the Recreation Department to continue to provide
financial assistance to children from low income families who could not otherwise afford
to participate in recreation programming.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Opportunity Grants Silent Auction cash donations totaled $4,050, and proceeds from the
silent auction totaled $9,065. A total of $13,115 has been deposited into the Recreation
Department's Opportunity Grants account.
