SKATEPARK SUBCOMMITTEE REPORT
INFO
ACTION
RECOMMENDED ACTION :
Receive staff report and Skate Park Subcommittee comments and make a recommendation to
the City Council as to if there is an appropriate site for a Skate Park facility.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
On July 17, 2007, staff presented a proposal to the City Council from the Parks and Recreation
Commission to expand the existing Skate Park at the Safety Center. Several questions came out
of that meeting and the Council directed staff to 1) work on further exploring the costs involved
with the proposed expansion and 2) work with the Parks and Recreation Commission to evaluate
potential sites for an alternative skate park. The alternative would replace the existing facility
should it become displaced as a result of current design efforts to locate needed City uses at the
Safety Center (Fire and Police Training and Public Works).
Concerning number 1 above, staff recently received additional information supplied by
Commissioner Cooper for costs given to him by a contractor to expand the Skate Park at the
Safety Center. Staff will be evaluating in detail these costs and will report back to the City
Council.
Related to the issue of appropriateness of sites, staff has been working with the Skate Park
Subcommittee (Craig, Cooper, and Hubbard). Staff met with the subcommittee and reviewed
several potential sites and included them on a rating sheet (Exhibit 1). From this list, the
subcommittee chose six sites to consider, all in the northwest quadrant of the City:
1. Zone 5 Park (future expansion area)
2. Veteran's Memorial Park (future)
3. Cannon Lake Park (future)
4. Pine Park along Madison Street (future expansion area)
5. Hosp Grove Park on the corner of Marron and Monroe (future expansion area)
6. Abandoned Reservoir on Buena Vista Way
The subcommittee, Recreation staff, and two Planning Department staff members then
conducted a site tour of the six sites.
The subcommittee has recommended the Reservoir site as the first choice and Hosp Grove as
the second choice.
