DATE: 111/19/07 STAFF: | CALARCO RECEIPT OF DONATION FROM THE FRIENDS OF CARRILLO RANCH, INC. Q INFO ACTION RECOMMENDED ACTION : Receive donation and recommend acceptance by the City Council. ITEM EXPLANATION : Earlier this year, staff was approached by Alan Kindle and George Wooldridge from the Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc. with a proposal to design, build, and donate a series of signs intended to clearly identify the many historic buildings, features, and trails that are of interest to visitors touring the park. Using the Leo Carrillo Ranch Park Master Plan Historic Ranch Identification Sign recommendations as a guide, George Wooldridge ingeniously designed two different sign prototypes from which staff was able to choose. The custom built signs were crafted from 28x6" rough cut planks with sawn wood sides, and the lettering was routed by hand. The recessed letters were painstakingly hand painted by Friends' Board members, and a finish paint application provided a fitting antique appearance. To complete the process, the signs were attached to a 4"x4" post and anchor—complete and ready for installation by staff. In all, 24 signs were constructed to identify the historic Hacienda, Deedie's House, and the Dawn Redwood Interpretive Trail just to name a few locations. George Wooldridge and members of the Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc. generously devoted more than 150 hours of volunteer time designing, constructing, and painting the signs. In addition, the Friends donated $500 for the acquisition of materials and supplies used to create the signs. The City of Carlsbad is committed to building strong community through volunteer projects such as this, and the Recreation Department wishes to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of George Wooldridge and the generosity of the Friends of Carrillo Ranch. The signs are an important addition and will make a substantial improvement to the Ranch's overall interpretive program. FISCAL IMPACT: The donation of materials, supplies and combined hours of volunteer service (at $21.06 per hour) represents an approximate $3,659 savings to the City's general fund. EXHIBITS: 1.
