DATE: 11/19/07 STAFF: CALARCO RECEIPT OF DONATION- DAWN REDWOOD INTERPRETIVE TRAIL INFO ACTION RECOMMENDED ACTION: Accept donation of the Dawn Redwood Interpretive Trail at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, and recommend acceptance by the City Manager. ITEM EXPLANATION: In January 2006, Richard T. Bex II, from Boy Scout Troop 748, inquired about designing and constructing an interpretive trail and planting two Dawn Redwood trees as his project for obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout. On July 21 and 22, 2006, Richard and members of Boy Scout Troop 776 converged on the Ranch to plant the two donated Dawn Redwood trees, install irrigation, build a walking path, and fabricate and install an interpretive sign. With the assistance of his Troop and family members, Richard designed the trail, custom built and installed the sign mount for the interpretive panel, designed and installed an irrigation system, and planted two Dawn Redwood trees. Richard devoted countless hours working with his family, volunteers, and Carrillo Ranch staff planning, implementing, and supervising the project which was designed to commemorate Leo Carrillo's affinity for, and dedication to, the propagation of Dawn Redwood trees in California. The City of Carlsbad, and the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, wishes to acknowledge the outstanding efforts and dedication of Eagle Scout Candidate Richard T. Bex II, Richard's family, and volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 776. Without all of their hard work and Richard's leadership, this project would not have been possible. Richard completed his Eagle Scout project in late 2006 and his Court of Honor—where he was officially awarded the Eagle Scout Rank—was held at the Ranch in May 2007. EXHIBITS: 1.
