DATE: | 02/04/08 STAFF: | SHAY RECEIPT OF DONATION- FALL FESTIVAL - 2007 Lxl ACTION RECOMMENDED ACTION: Receive a donation of six hundred and fifty dollars ($650) in support of the November 10, 2007, Fall Festival special event, and recommend acceptance by the City Council. ITEM EXPLANATION: On Saturday, November 10, 2007, the Recreation Department hosted the Fall Festival special event at Leo Carrillo Ranch. There was an estimated attendance of over 800 participants. The event highlighted the Mexican-American culture with attendees learning about the culture through centuries-old Mexican corridor ballads, mariachis, and Folkloric dancers. Eight vendors were invited to participate in the Bazaar and sold pottery, jewelry, and refreshments. The event once again hosted a Jalapeno Eating Contest and a Fun Zone, which included pinatas every hour as well as Mexican- American crafts, a giant slide, an obstacle course, and a bounce house for the kids. The main feature of the event included a chili cook-off with thirteen contestants competing for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes. Contestants also competed to be the overall winner of the People's Choice, Most Unique and Hottest Chilis. The Recreation Department partnered with the Carlsbad High-Noon Rotary Club in presenting the chili cook-off. The Carlsbad High-Noon Rotary Club provided the judges for the competition as well as $650 in cash for prizes and general support of Special Events. FISCAL IMPACT: The donated money helps offset the actual cost of providing special events. The six hundred and fifty dollars ($650) provided three cash awards of fifty dollar ($50) each for the first, second, and third place winners of the chili cook-off. The remaining five hundred dollars ($500) was deposited into the Special Events trust account #149-4503-5651 in support of future special events. A letter of appreciation has already been sent to the Carlsbad High-Noon Rotary Club on behalf of the Recreation Department and the City of Carlsbad. EXHIBITS: None
