RECEIPT OF DONATION FROM
CARLSBAD SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION ACTION
RECOMMENDED ACTION :
Receive donation of a batting cage and associated site landscaping from the Carlsbad Softball
Association (CSA) and recommend acceptance by the City Council.
ITEM EXPLANATION :
In September 2006, CSA submitted a proposal to construct a batting cage at Calavera Hills
Community Park. The batting cage was constructed with the intention of increasing participant
and spectator safety, and to enhance the amenities available to all who use the Calavera athletic
fields.
CSA generously offered to design, construct, and finance the entire project. Additionally, they
volunteered to blend the new construction of the batting cage with the existing park surroundings
by landscaping the project area with several species of trees including Pines, Camphors,
Tipuanas, and Jacarandas (Exhibit 1).
The work was completed by licensed contractors with required permits, approved plans and
specifications, and proof of financial security. CSA coordinated its work with representatives
from the Recreation, Parks Maintenance, and Building Departments to the sole satisfaction of the
City.
A timely letter of appreciation was sent to CSA recognizing their thoughtful donation.
Staff is grateful for this opportunity to partner with CSA, and believes that having a batting cage
at Calavera Hills Community Park will be an outstanding asset for the benefit of the entire
community.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The donation of the batting cage and landscaping represents an approximate savings of $15,650
to the City's General Fund.
