\X\ ACTION
RECOMMENDED ACTION :
Receive individual donation of cash and product in support of the April 19, 2008, Carlsbad Love
Kids event, and recommend acceptance by the City Manager.
ITEM EXPLANATION :
On Saturday, April 19th, the Recreation Department joined with the Carlsbad Village Optimist
Club in hosting the Carlsbad Loves Kids special event at Calavera Hills Community Park. There
was an estimated attendance of over 300 attendees.
This year's event had a variety of activities that included a fun zone, competitions in basketball,
football, soccer, and baseball, and entertainment. Kids of all ages had the opportunity to create
crafts and get their faces painted. Several outside organizations (Helen Woodward Animal
Center, La Petite Academy, Velocity Sports, Girl Scout Troop 1426, Rady Children's Hospital 10
Mobile, and Integrity Chiropractic) also provided information for the parents and children in
attendance.
The main goal of the event, besides bringing the community together in support of our youth, was
to highlight and introduce the Recreation Department's upcoming summer camp programs to the
public. By spotlighting these unique camps, the Department has seen a sharp increase in camp
enrollment for summer.
The Village Optimist Club partnered with the Recreation Department by providing the rock wall
and bungee jump and the refreshments for the event. The rock wall/bungee jump fair market
value is $1,100, and the fair market value of the 25 pizzas ($300) and 300 hot dogs ($228) is
$528, for a total of $1,628. The Village Optimist Club also generously donated a check to the
Recreation Department valued at $323.68, which covered the cost of the event's prizes, making
the total value of the partnership $1,951.68.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The cost associated with the partnership and donated cash helped offset the actual cost of
providing this speciaj event. The three hundred twenty-three dollars and sixty-eight cents
($323.68) in cash was deposited into the Special Events trust account #1494503-5651.
A letter of appreciation has already been sent on behalf of the Recreation Department and the
City of Carlsbad.
EXHIBITS:
