ITEM EXPLANATION: Attached is the Summary Report of the June 16, 2008 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission. EXHIBITS: 1. Summary Report - June 16, 2008 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting June 19,2008 TO: MAYOR LEWIS MAYOR PRO TEM KULCHIN CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS HALL, PACKARD, NYGAARD FROM: MANAGEMENT ANALYST SUMMARY REPORT OF THE JUNE 16,2008 PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING CONSENT CALENDAR - The following consent items were unanimously approved 6-0: 1. AB It 0608-1 SUMMARY REPORT - (ACTION! - The Commission accepted and approved the Summary Report of the May 19,2008 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. 2. AB It 0608-2 RECEIPT OF DONATIONS -2008 CARLSBAD LOVES KIDS - (ACTIOM -The Commission accepted donations of products and cash in the amount of $323.68 in support of the 2008 Carlsbad Loves Kids special event, and recommended acceptance by the City Manager. DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS 3. AB It 0608-3 EAGLE SCOUT IAN MORTIMER TRAIL PROJECT RECOGNITION- (INFO)- The Commission received a report from staff recognizing the efforts of Eagle Scout Ian Mortimer for trail improvements to the Calavera Hills, Village H trail. 4. AB # 0608-4 BEACH PRESERVATION COMMITTEE UPDATE - (INFO} -The Commission received an update report from the chair and staff liaison of Carlsbad's Beach Preservation Committee regarding the Committee's activities. 5. AB # 0608-5 ALGA NORTE PARK AND SKATEPARK UPDATE - (INFO) -After receiving a status report from staff regarding Alga Node Park, including the proposed skatepark and its relationship to recent recommendations for an additional skatepark in the City, the Commission unanimously recommended to relay the following information to the City Council via the Summary Report of the meeting: 'The Parks and Recreation Commission would like to restate their understanding that the Alga Norte Skatepark was planned as an additional skatepark in the City, rather than a replacement for the potential loss of the skatepark at the Safety Center. Additionally, if future plans for the Safety Center location do include removal of the skatepark at that site, the Commission feels strongly that a replacement should be built prior to its removal. Finally, in light of recent fuel cost increases, the Commission would like to have the City Council revisit the ordinance prohibiting skateboarding in the Village if the skateboard is being used as a mode of transportation rather than for recreation."
