DATE: 0309-2 3/16/09 STAFF: | SHAY ACCEPTANCE OF DONATIONS TEEN SCENE: BATTLE OF THE BANDS INFO |Xl ACTION RECOMMENDED ACTION: Recommend acceptance by the City Council the individual in-kind donations of product totaling four thousand six hundred and five dollars ($4,605) in support of the January 24, 2009 - Teen Scene: Battle of the Bands special event. ITEM EXPLANATION: On Saturday, January 24th, the Recreation Department hosted the Teen Scene special event, which featured the 6 annual Battle of the Bands competition at Calavera Hills Community Center from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There was an estimated attendance of over 600 people. Participation ranged from nine teen bands in our Battle of the Bands competition, 33 teens in our art exhibition, and 16 teens in our video game competition. This event was created to give teens an opportunity to express themselves in a safe environment. We had several avenues that featured teen creativity, artistic ability, talent, and skill. The event included an art exhibit, a film festival, a Guitar Hero video game competition, Dance Dance Revolution, and Karaoke Revolution. The main feature of the event, Battle of the Bands, brought out nine very talented teen bands, each showing off their skills during a 20 minute set. Four judges, all professionals in the music industry, rated each band on stage presence, crowd response, originality, vocal ability, and instrumental talent. The band Tan Sister Radio, won the competition to take the title of "2009 Carlsbad Battle of the Band Champion". The Recreation Department sought out donations for the prize packs for our Battle of the Bands Champion and other activities. Several businesses supported the event with in-kind donations at a value of $4,605. Attached is a detailed list of the businesses and their donations. FISCAL IMPACT: The cost associated with the donated products for prizes helped offset the actual cost of providing this special event. Letters of appreciation have already been sent on behalf of the Parks & Recreation Department and the City of Carlsbad to these organizations.
