DATE: STAFF: 3/16/09 | GRANSE ACCEPTANCE OF DONATION FROM MARLEY WHITE D INFO ACTION RECOMMENDED ACTION : Receive a report on the Marley White donation and recommend acceptance by the City Council in the amount of five thousand dollars ($5,000). ITEM EXPLANATION : Marley White has served diligently as a docent at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park since its opening in 2003. Marley freely shares her passion and knowledge of the rich history of the ranch as a tour guide for scheduled weekend tours, as well as leading 4th Grade California History and Art Program school tours. She has contributed countless volunteer hours to the park, and has enjoyed teaching hundreds of children and adults the importance of our local history in relation to Leo Carrillo and his historic Rancho de los Quiotes. On March 5, 2009, Parks & Recreation staff was presented with a donation to the Carrillo Ranch Fund from Ms. White in the amount of $5,000. Staff periodically receives donations from visitors, but those of this magnitude are extremely rare. Ms. White made this generous donation with the stipulation that it be used in part to modify the existing picnic shade structure with a windscreen to provide a more comfortable location for park visitors to relax on a hot summer days. The remainder of the donation may be used for other park projects as needed. The City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department wishes to acknowledge Marley White's generosity of both her time, talent and her monetary donation. A letter of appreciation was sent on behalf of the Parks and Recreation Department to express our gratitude. FISCAL IMPACT: The donation from Marley White in the amount of $5,000 will be deposited into the Carrillo Ranch Fund to be used for future purposes related to the development, operation, and maintenance of Carrillo Ranch. These funds will be appropriated at an upcoming meeting of the City Council for specific park projects including a windscreen shade structure for existing picnic area, a new exhibit case for interpretive displays, and a log splitter to assist staff with firewood for the visitor center.
