UPDATE ON CHASE FIELD CONCESSION STAND

RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Receive staff report regarding Chase Field Concession Stand.
ITEM EXPLANATION:
At the October 20, 2008 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, staff gave a report on the
Chase Field Concession Stand. Items presented were:
1. The history of the building, including dates of upgrades completed.
2. The partnership with Carlsbad Youth Baseball (CYB) with most recent upgrade in 2002.
3. Current County Health Department laws that affect the sales of concessions.
At that time, Mr. Tom Watson, 4427 Salisbury Drive, Carlsbad, spoke on the Chase Field
concession stand. He is the president of the Carlsbad Youth Baseball organization and
expressed challenges with the operations of the concession stand. Notes were taken and staff
researched some options for improvements based on Mr. Watson's concerns.
Within the last four to five months, staff completed some renovations on the building in order to
make it more usable. Modifications include:
1. Selective roof fascia replaced and painted.
2. Exterior walls and doors power washed.
3. Exterior concession ledge repaired and repainted.
4. Exterior doors and selective trim repainted.
5. Selective interior lighting lamps replaced.
6. Urinal replaced and related tile repaired.
7. Vent covers installed/replaced where needed.
8. Selective interior walls re-painted and touched-up.
9. Interior walls and cabinets hand cleaned.
10. Mis-positioned interior electrical outlet sealed and several new electrical outlets added
11. Installed new, larger capacity water heater.
12. Deep cleaned floor & verified the integrity of the sealer.
13. Removed old refrigerator so CYB could install more shelving.
During the October meeting, Mr. Watson also expressed an interest in the City tearing down the
Chase Field Concession Stand and rebuilding it as to the 2002 plans. In these economic times,
staff feels that any more renovations to Chase Field Concession Stand should be placed on hold.
