DATE: 5/18/09 STAFF: SHAY ACCEPTANCE OF IN-KIND AND CASH DONATIONS CARLSBAD LOVES KIDS X ACTION RECOMMENDED ACTION: Recommend acceptance of in-kind and cash donations by the City Council in support of the 2009 Carlsbad Loves Kids special event. This donation is comprised of individual cash donations of three hundred ($300) and in-kind donations totaling one thousand one hundred dollars ($1,100). ITEM EXPLANATION: On Saturday, March 21, 2009, the Parks & Recreation Department hosted the Carlsbad Loves Kids event at Stagecoach Community Park from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Over 1,500 people participated in a variety of activities such as a fun zone, carnival games, sports competitions, art and craft activities, and demonstrations from the department summer camp programs. Youth dancers and cheerleaders perform along with demonstrations on self defense from the Preschool Karate program. Carlsbad Loves Kids was created to celebrate the children of Carlsbad and to introduce the different summer camps that the Department offers. The event also coincides with the distribution of the Parks & Recreation Department's Summer Camp Guide in order to boost early online registration. The event featured booths representing each category in the summer camp catalog with information and samplings from camp instructors as it relates to the particular camp they are offering. Parents and potential campers had an opportunity to meet with instructors to ask questions that assisted them in deciding which camp(s) they wanted to participate in. Besides being an informative, fun event; residents were able to come together as a community and spend an active and healthy morning at one of the city's most scenic parks. The Carlsbad Village Optimist Club partnered with the Department to help make this event free to the public. The Optimists generously donated cash and in-kind services that covered the cost of prizes, and the Fun Zone's fire truck slide and obstacle course. Letters of appreciation have already been sent on behalf of the Parks & Recreation Department and the City of Carlsbad to these organizations. FISCAL IMPACT: The donations helped offset the actual cost of hosting this event. DEPARTMENT CONTACT: Rachael Shay 760-602-7519, rshav@carlsbadca.gov. EXHIBITS: None
