DATE: | 04/19/10 STAFF: | COATES DEPARTMENT REPORT INFO x ACTION RECOMMENDED ACTION: Receive a presentation from the Parks and Recreation staff. ITEM EXPLANATION: John Coates, Parks & Recreation Director, will report on recently completed and upcoming Parks and Recreation activities, donations and grants, as well as other topics of local interest. EXHIBITS: 1. Department Report EXHIBIT 1 ^ CITY OF PARKS & RECREATION CARLSBAD DEPARTMENT REPORT Parks <k Recreation April 19, 2010 1. Recreation Program Highlights - Preschool -Sponsored one of their annual field trips. They went to Sea World to learn about sea life and all the underwater adventures that take place. Their next trip is to Camp Pendleton to go horseback riding. Everyone involved enjoys these outings because it's a chance for families to experience something exciting out of the ordinary together. Traditional Camps Programs participated in the Eggstravaganza event on April 3rd to promote spring and summer camps. Spring camps filled up fast and people are getting ready for summer. This was a great opportunity for staff to get out and reach the public by answering their questions. This also allowed staff to hear feedback on future programs they would like to see the city offer. Camps start June 21st! Teens (L.I.T.E. Program) attendance has been on the rise over the last several months. Attendance levels have increased from 9 to 24 participates per day in the past year. We have also seen a rise in the overall GPA of the participants; currently the program has a 2.89 cumulative GPA. 2. Donations - 3/14/10- LCR In-Kind Donation -Solana Beach Presbyterian Church volunteers donated their time and financial resources to paint weathered white fences and benches at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park. The project was organized by the Church as part of its community wide Day of Service campaign. A total of 19 volunteers donated 65 hours of time which represents a savings of $1,537 to the City. The Church additionally donated $340 in painting supplies to help support the project. The entire project represents a total saving of $1,877 to the City's general fund. 3/25/10- LCR In-Kind Donation - California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) Alpha Xi Delta | donated their time painting the weathered wooden fences in the parking lot at Leo Carrillo Ranch | Historic Park. The project was organized by the sorority to give back to their community and to j provide their members with an opportunity to come together as a team. A total of 10 volunteers } donated 25 hours of time in service to their community. The entire volunteer project represents a | saving of $591 to the City's general fund. j 4/3/10 - EGGstravaganza Spring Festival 2010 - The Parks & Recreation Department hosted the j annual EGGstravaganza Spring Festival special event at Poinsettia Park from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Cash donations from Point Loma Credit Union and Union Bank totaling $750 helped to offset the cost ; of the event. ! j 4/8/10 - LCR Cash Donation - A cash donation in the amount of $700 was presented to the Friends of I Carrillo Ranch by an anonymous donor. In their continuing support of the operations of Leo Carrillo | Ranch Historic Park, the Friends of Carrillo Ranch have generously donated the entire amount to the j Carrillo Ranch Special Revenue Fund on April 8, 2010, to assist with purchases associated with a new "Cisco Kid" exhibit scheduled for a grand opening in June, 2010. 3. Events Completed - 3/18/10 - Trail Volunteer Quarterly Meeting -10 people were in attendance with discussions on trail conditions, trail security, recap of volunteer work and the review of Lake Calavera Master Plan. 4/3/10 - Eggstravaganza Spring Festival - Event held at Poinsettia Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Over 3,000 attendees enjoyed the "Egg Scramble" activity in addition to the fun zone, "Soak the Bunny," face painting, demonstrations from the Parks and Recreation summer camp program and much more. 4/8/10 - LCR Photo Opportunity - A group photo was taken in front of the recently restored Leo Carrillo Ranch Barn with 25 people in attendance. In the near future the photo will be available for viewing on the National Trust for Historic Preservation web site, City of Carlsbad web site and an upcoming Parks & Recreation Newsletter. 4/10/10 - Trail Work @ Lake Calavera - Event attracted 30 people who helped to improve existing trails and install new signage. 4/16/10 - Arbor Day Proclamation at City Council 4. Upcoming Events - 4/24/10 - Arbor Day Celebration - @ Aviara Community Park from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Plant trees in a city park - volunteer registration begins at 8:30 a.m. 5/1/10 - Carlsbad Beach Fest - @ Tamarack / Frazee State Beach at Pine Avenue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public with the hope of raising awareness and generating support for coastal preservation and stewardship. 5/8/10 - Native Plant Seminar - @ Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Center from 8:30 a.m. to noon. 5/15/10- Wild West Fest - @ Leo Carrillo Ranch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enter the Salsa Contest!
