P&R Department co-hosted Pickleball Clinic - On Saturday, April 24, approximately 30 individuals participated in a Pickleball Clinic at Poinsettia Park as a way of introducing interested parties to the sport. This free clinic was co-hosted by USAPA member Pat Carroll who demonstrated basic skills and fundamentals of the sport to those in attendance. This well received event was also a way of promoting the California State Senior Olympic Games, with the Pickleball event scheduled for Poinsettia Park June 1-4. The City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation department is proud to be a co-sponsor of that event and looks forward to working with all involved parties. 2. Capital Improvement Project Update(s) - Alga Norte Community Park Grading - On Thursday, April 8, rough grading work began on the park site. The grading has been moving along well and is slightly ahead of schedule. With the rainy season waning, the project is anticipated to be completed on schedule sometime this summer. There have been a few minor issues, specifically unanticipated groundwater encounters, but not out of the ordinary for large grading operations. 3. Recreation Program Highlight(s) - Aquatics continues to offer a full spectrum of programming at the Monroe Street Pool. Beginning and intermediate skill level swim lessons for ages 6 months and up, rentals to programs offering training in water polo for girls and boys, springboard diving, and youth & adult swimming occurs seven days a week. Last fiscal year Aquatics operated the pool 362 days, spent $520,050 and brought in $312,734 for a 60% cost recovery. The pool is surrounded by Carlsbad High School, which is currently a little less than halfway through a five-year long renovation. The pool recently underwent a minor renovation as well, replacing all the underwater light wiring. Adult Sports Summary Spring 2010 - The adult sports division is nearing the end of a fun filled spring season for one-hundred four softball, thirty soccer, and thirty-two basketball teams. Many co-workers, friends, and family members participate in our sports programs as a way to exercise, stay in shape, and to instill community comradely. The Adult sports staff is proud to say that each year we have many returning teams with some participating in the league for over ten years. Local businesses also enjoy company sponsored employee teams. Some of those businesses include; Legoland, Taylor Made, Callaway Golf, Acushnet, 3E, Sheraton Carlsbad, Invitrogen, Upper Deck, and restaurants based in Carlsbad. Youth Sports - Pee Wee Basketball & Soccer - The pee-wee season for basketball and soccer is currently under way.
