A $1,000 donation to the Opportunity Grants program was made by North County Picklers on behalf
of the California State Senior Games. The first-ever California State Senior Games Pickleball
Tournament was held at Poinsettia Park from June 1-4.
3. Events Completed -
6/1/10- 6/4/10 - California Senior Olympic Pickleball Tournament - The department co-sponsored
the California Senior Olympic Games Pickleball Tournament June 1 through 4 at Poinsettia Park.
Mayor Pro Tern Ann Kulchin and Council Member Keith Blackburn opened the tournament by making
the first official serve over the net. During the tournament, 128 registered players participated in 270
matches. While many local players participated, approximately half of the players traveled more than
100 miles for the tournament. Each day more than 100 spectators enjoyed fast-paced singles and
doubles matches. Information about pickleball open play at Calavera Hills Community Center was
made available to all participants.
5/15/10 - Wild West Fest - Wild West Fest took place on May 15 at Leo Carrillo Historic Park. The
event brought out a crowd of over 1,700 people. The first annual salsa contest was a huge success
with 15 individual participants and 14 local restaurants competing in seven different categories
including best overall salsa, hottest salsa, and best presentation. The beautiful weather made for a
great day of bull riding, salsa tasting, western shoot outs, pony rides, and other activities.
6/5/10 - National Trails Day Event - The Parks & Recreation Department hosted a National Trails
Day Event at the Carlsbad Oaks North Business Park trail. The event began with a hike lead by Center
for Natural Lands Manager, Markus Spiegelberg. The educational hike was followed by a trail clean-
up with approximately 20 volunteers participating and donating over 40 hours of volunteer service.
In addition, Scout troop 784, was out working on Eagle Scout Jace Mullen's trail kiosk project, located
at the trailhead parking and business park located at the corner of El Fuerte and Faraday Avenue.
6/17/10 - Quarterly Trail Volunteer Meeting - Took place at the Carlsbad Senior Center. Trail
Captains, Parks and Recreation staff and volunteers met to discuss trail volunteer projects, trail
planning and other trail related topics.
6/19/10 - Nutro/Room to Run event at Dog Park - Event took place on Saturday, June 19th from
8:00 a.m. until noon at the Ann D. L'Heureux Memorial Dog Park with five volunteers from the Nutro
Company planting Tristania trees along the perimeter of the dog park. They also provided a booth
with giveaways, coupons, and etc. This was part of Nutro's national campaign called "Room to Run:
Dog Park Appreciation Project" in which they are providing volunteers and funding to provide dog
park enhancements such as trees, benches, etc. The message is that the company supports places
for dogs and owners to connect with nature, and that the company is connected to local
communities through partnerships.
