DATE: 10/18/2010 STAFF: SPICKARD DEPARTMENT REPORT INFO ACTION RECOMMENDED ACTION: Receive a presentation from the Parks and Recreation staff. ITEM EXPLANATION: Sue Spickard, Recreation Services Manager, will report on recently completed and upcoming Parks and Recreation activities, donations and grants, as well as other topics of local interest. EXHIBITS: 1. Department Report ciTY OF PARKS & RECREATION CARLSBAD DEPARTMENT REPORT Parks & Recreation October 18, 2010 1. Recreation Program Highlights - The Parks & Recreation Department Senior Center - September Events: • On September 9th the Sr. Center hosted their annual Ice Cream Social from 12:30-2:30 PM. Over 100 seniors attended the event which featured ice cream sundaes and hot dogs for $1.00, music by 'The Tumbleweeds" and a Hawaiian Dance Show by our own Senior Center Hawaiian Dance Class. A big thank you goes to Rite- Aid of Carlsbad for their donation of ice cream. • September was Fall Prevention Month at the Carlsbad Senior Center. On Monday, September 20th, guest speaker Judi Condie, a physical therapist and Board Certified Geriatric Specialist provided lecture on how to identify the risk factors and how to improve their home safety and reduce the risks of falling. On September 22nd our first Fall Prevention Awareness Fair featuring health, balance and safety professionals that assessed each participant and their risk of falling. 97 Participants received a Fall Risk Profile that was completed as they went to individual screening stations. They may now take their Risk Profile to their doctor for review and appropriate treatment interventions. 2. Events completed with Donations- 9/25/10 - Lake Calavera Cleanup - Carlsbad celebrated National Public Lands Day at Lake Calavera. Approximately 80 volunteers repaired and cleared trails, planted native species and installed trail signage including 15 scout volunteers (Scout Troop 706) and 60 volunteers from the Carlsbad Stake Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Donations for event: Over 240 hours of volunteer service hours were donated for this work. Those businesses supporting this event included Habitat Restoration Sciences- $456- Water, labor, tools, training, and equipment to plant 250,1-gallon native plants, Kahoots Pet Store- $254- dog leashes, doggie bags, and other dog treats, Jimbo's Naturally- $193.69- water, granola bars and fruit National Public Lands Day is the country's largest, hands-on effort to improve and enhance America's public lands. It is a project of the National Environmental Education Foundation, a congressionally chartered nonprofit organization advancing environmental literacy in the general public. 10/9/10 - Trail Work Event - This month's location was at Calavera Hills Village H, North. Approximately 10 trail volunteers donated over 24 hours of volunteer service assisting in clean up of the trails, including erosion repairs and litter pick up. 10/9/10 - Pumpkin Plunge - Splish Splash Pumpkin Plunge was a successful bash at the Monroe Street pool on Saturday, Oct 9. Just over 500 people enjoyed the sunny day of pool activities such as dead dolphin races, brain Shootout, bone collector, and mutant fishing. Other activities involved a haunted house, a fun zone, face painting, a costume contest, and the highlight of the event, a floating pumpkin patch, where every child left with their very own pumpkin. Donations for event: Henry's Farmers Market generously donated over 300 pumpkins for the event along with other members and businesses in the community who provided donations for the trick- or-treat stations bringing the total of donations to $2,087.73. 7 Page 2 3. Donation(s) - 10/11/10 - Receipt of Donation -The Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc. donated $2,500 in support of the 4th Grade California History and Art Program. This program is offered free of charge to all 4th grade classes in Carlsbad, and includes history of Carrillo Ranch relevant to the 4th grade school curriculum as well as an art component with focus on Carrillo Ranch 1/1/10 - 6/30/10 - Receipt of Donation - The Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department has received and deposited a total of $4,820 in donations to the Carrillo Ranch Trust Fund. Donations were generated from private donors, privately guided tours, Joan Kindle's handcrafted gifts, and from many generous anonymous donors. No single donation was in excess of $500. 4.
