DATE: 4/18/11 STAFF: GRANSE RECEIPT OF DONATION FROM CARLSBAD LIGHTNING SOCCER ACTION RECOMMENDED ACTION: Receive a donation of cash in the amount of Five thousand and five hundred dollars ($5,500) and an in-kind donation in the amount of Two hundred and ninety-one dollars and forty-one cents ($291.41) in support of the Opportunities Grant Scholarship Program and recommend acceptance by the City Council ITEM EXPLANATION: Carlsbad Lightning Soccer Club has been hosting their annual Carlsbad Cup Soccer Tournament since 2007, drawing well over 100 teams each year to multiple facilities and fields in Carlsbad. As a Carlsbad resident youth sports organization, Lightning Soccer only pays a reduced rate for athletic field lights during the event. In appreciation of the service they receive from the city and in the spirit of their philosophy, Lightning Soccer decided to make a donation to the Parks and Recreation Department Opportunities Grant Scholarship Program. On April 8, 2011, the Parks & Recreation Department was presented with a check in the amount of $5,500 in support of the Department's Opportunity Grant Program. This program provides scholarship opportunities for very low-income Carlsbad resident families In addition to the above mentioned monetary donation, Carlsbad Lightning Soccer Club has also donated four new lock boxes to be used by the baseball and soccer organizations that offer games and practices at Aviara Community Park. The value of this in-kind donation is $291.41. The City of Carlsbad and the Parks & Recreation Department wishes to acknowledge and thank Carlsbad Lightning Soccer Club for their generosity with both donations. A letter of appreciation has been sent to the organization. FISCAL IMPACT: The donation from Carlsbad Lightning Soccer Club in the amount of $5,500 will be deposited into the Opportunities Grant Scholarship account#1404515 and appropriated at an upcoming meeting of the City Council for support of very low-income youth in the Carlsbad community.
