DATE: 06/18/12 DEPARTMENT REPORT mmmmam ACTION STAFF: SPICKARD PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION - AGENDA BILL RECOMMENDED ACTION: Receive a presentation from the Parks and Recreation staff. ITEM EXPLANATION: Sue Spickard, Recreation Services Manager, will report on recently completed and upcoming Parks and Recreation activities, donations and grants, as well as other topics of local interest. EXHIBITS: 1. Department Report PARKS & RECREATION ^ fr^Vl^r^Vr^ DEPARTMENT REPORT CARLSBAD Parks & Recreation June 18, 2012 1. Alga Norte Community Park Tuesday, June 12 was the BIG DAY for the long awaited Alga Norte Community Park groundbreaking ceremony! Outgoing Parks and Recreation Commissioner and Chairperson Denny Cooper was the master of ceremonies. The event was well attended by dignitaries, staff, design/build team, and the community. Actual construction is anticipated to begin later this month after the final permits are obtained. Completion is expected towards the end of 2013. 2. Pine Avenue Park Restroom / Storage Facility Construction began May 29 by SD&B Company. The contract work includes; modifications to existing utilities, concrete removal and replacement and the building pad preparation. A separate contract with Restroom Facilities Limited will provide for shipping, placement and full installation ofthe new restroom facility at the park site. The new restroom is expected to be open and fully operational in late June. 3. Beaches and Lagoons Sandag Regional Beach Sand Proiect II - Sandag awarded a construction contract with Great Lakes Dredging to pump beach sand onto San Diego County's beaches, starting in August. The project schedule indicates the beach site along north Carlsbad should receive 200,000 cubic yards of sand during the first two weeks of September and south Carlsbad beach should receive 130,000 cubic yards of sand during the first two weeks of October. 4. Recreation Adventure Laser Tag - The department will be hosting the first ever of this kind summer camp to be held at Valley Middle School lower field during the week of August 6 -10. This new camp is going to bring excitement to Carlsbad with an outdoor laser tag adventure. First you must make it through basic training, and then conquer the obstacle course of rock walls, rope swings, and laser beams. Each day you will learn to work as a team as you prepare for new missions; protecting your home base, capturing the enemy jet, and rescuing captured teammates. Featuring the advanced G14 outdoor laser tag system and a playing field that resembles a Hollywood movie set will make this a one-of-a-kind camp experience. Class enrollment is over half full with the class start date almost two months away! 5. Parks Maintenance Trees and Landscapes/Hardscapes - Staff and contractors pruned trees for proactive maintenance at the Arts office. Holiday and Pio Pico Parks, the Downtown Village, and in the Northwest/Southeast streets quadrants ofthe city. Staff worked on slope enhancements and trail re-grading at La Costa Canyon Park, and streetscape bench re-positioning throughout the Downtown Village. Staff refurbished and re- mulched selective planters, performed shrub and ground cover pruning, and aerated turf. At Chase Fields staff undertook a volunteer project with the streets division and two Marine Corps volunteers, to remove a large quantity of uneven brick pavers from the public right of way and park entry. The streets division subsequently replaced the pavers with poured concrete. 7 6. Completed Event(s) / Donation(s) 5/19 - Wild West Fest - Carlsbad Parks & Recreation highlighted some of the history of Carlsbad featuring a Native American themed Wild West Fest event from ll a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park. Close to 1,000 people visited the ranch for fun crafts that included rain sticks and head dresses along with demonstrations with a mortar and pestle grinding acorns and bows and arrows. There were pony rides, a salsa contest. Native American drumming, dancing, and storytelling performances. Chili's Encinitas helped to sponsor the salsa tasting by judging some of the categories and providing prizes consisting of $60 in gift cards to the winners, and samples of their signature chili to the event's visitors. 5/19 - Bike to Work Day - Bike to Work Day took place from 6 to 9 a.m. This year the city sponsored two pit stop locations, one at Zone 5 Park and one at Pine Avenue and Carlsbad Blvd. We had great success at both locations tripling our 2011 participation. With additional private businesses in Carlsbad hosting pit stop locations, there were a total of five pit stops which ranked Carlsbad just behind the City of San Diego as the most pit stops offered in the county. 6/9 - Carlsbad Beach Fest at Tamarack Beach - Staff supported the Carlsbad Beach Fest Foundation and the State of California Parks and Recreation Department in holding the fifth annual Beach Fest. Approximately one mile of beach, from Pine Avenue to Tamarack Avenue, was filled with competitive sporting events, free beach activities, live music/entertainment, food, a beach cleanup, and environmental protection/sustainability booths. The event was the product ofthe Carlsbad Beach Fest Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works with the Carlsbad community to promote beach and ocean stewardship through education, and provides supplemental funding to the State of California for local coastal improvement projects. 6/9 - Trail Volunteer Event Completed - A trail event was held at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Northshore Trail, with staff and volunteers removing invasive species adjacent to the trail, and regrading the surface of the trail to address erosion issues. 6/18 - Donations received for Memorial Bench and Tree Program - Received during FY 11-12 a total of $2,300 for the Carlsbad Parks Memorial Bench and Tree Program from three separate donors; Ms. Sally Ann Zullinger $1,250, Ms. Bonnie Dominguez $850 and Mr. Mike Partelow $200. The memorial benches and trees were installed at Magee Park. 7. Upcoming Events Monday, 6/18 - Pizza for a Cause Night @ That Pizza Place - 5 to 10 p.m.. That Pizza Place has partnered with the Parks & Recreation Department to provide an opportunity for the department to raise funds for the Opportunity Grant Program by offering to donate 20% of all dining proceeds collected on Monday, June 18, 2012 between the hours of 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. This includes both dine-in and take-out orders. Make Monday your pizza night and join in on the fun! Saturday, 7/7 - Community Wellness Expo @ Westfield Plaza Camino Real -10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. This expo is geared toward individual and family healthy lifestyles! There will be many different activities to keep everyone engaged. Attractions include unique relays, agility tests, seminars; Wii fit demos, plus live demonstrations for youth, teens, and adults. Everything needed to participate in a triathlon will be for sale. Also, lots of booths with health, fitness, and sporting supplies, triathlon accessories, nutritional supplements, and athletic services will be there. Sunday, 7/8 - Carlsbad Triathlon @ Tamarack Beach - Beginning at 8 a.m., the Triathlon is a sprint distance competition held annually on the second Sunday in July by the City ofCarlsbad Parks & Recreation Department. It consists of a IK swim, a 25K bike ride and a 5K run and is considered to be one ofthe top five longest running triathlons. The course begins at Tamarack Surf Beach and follows the coastline ofCarlsbad, past scenic beaches, lagoons and a wildlife preserve. Only 1,000 slots are available this year and the event is expected to fill up quickly. Participants may register online, by mail or on the day before the race. Tuesday, 7/10 - Parks and Recreation Proclamation will be read at the City Council meeting at 6:00 p.m. to recognize Parks and Recreation Month July 2012. Tuesday, 7/10 - Denny Cooper Proclamation will be read at the City Council meeting at 6:00 p.m. in honor of Denny's time and service as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner. Saturday, 7/14 -Trail Volunteer Work @ Hosp Grove from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.. Wear gloves, close- toed shoes and sunscreen and help the city work on the trail by removing weeds, repairing trail erosion, filling In ruts and installing trail signs. Saturday to Sunday, 8/11 to 8/12 - Snores n S'mores - An overnight adventure at Aviara Community Park that begins on 8/11 at 4:30 p.m. with camper check-in and tent set-up. After pitching your tent on the field you can set out on a night that includes adventures, fun activities, food and family time. Enjoy minion crafts. Despicable BINGO, and an adventure that introduces you to arch nemesis, Gru and Vector; you will deliver Miss Hattie's cookies, visit the Super Silly Fun Land, experience anti-gravity serum, and take a rocket ship to capture the moon. End the evening with s'mores, popcorn and a movie "Despicable Me" while taking in the stars. Weekend ends at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 12. Admission is $20 per person and pre-sale ends August 9. To register, call 760-602-7510 (Class # 53526). Friday, 8/17 - Dinner and a Movie @ Leo Carrillo Ranch - This fundraising event helps support the Leo Carrillo Historic Park. Event will include a hearty dinner, live entertainment and a silent auction with Leo Carrillo's Hacienda as the backdrop. Tickets $30/each that includes one dinner, complimentary door prize entry and free popcorn. Advance sales only before August 17 - no sales at the door. Only 150 tickets available. Movie - Phantom ofthe Opera (1943). Friday, 8/24 - Leo Carrillo Film Festival @ Leo Carrillo Ranch - The first of a five part film festival from Hollywood's Golden Era starring Leo Carrillo, screened outdoors under the stars atthe legendary actor's rancho will be shown beginning on Friday, August 24 and conclude on Friday, September 21. Movies start promptly at sunset. Grounds open at 5:00 p.m. for picnics. Tours ofthe hacienda will be available for one hour before sunset. Bring a low back chair, flashlight, warm clothes and blanket. Refreshments available for sale or bring your own picnic. The first featured film will be 'The Gay Amigo". Movies begin promptly at sunset with a showing ofthe Cisco Kid before the main feature.
