DATE: 6/17/13 ACTION STAFF RECOMMENDED ACTION: Receive donations and recommend acceptance by the City Council. ITEM EXPLANATION: Below is a summary of donations received by the Parks & Recreation Department: CARLSBAD MEMORIAL BENCH AND TREE PROGRAM In the past fiscal year, the Carlsbad Parks Memorial Bench and Tree Program has been the recipient of the following two donations for a memorial bench and a memorial tree: • Mr. Seven Nelson $ 850 • Ms. Lorraine Edwards $ 650 The memorial bench and memorial tree were installed at Pine Avenue Park. JOAN KINDLE DONATION TO THE CARRILLO RANCH TRUST FUND Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park staff received a generous donation of 212 custom embroidered “Flying LC” logo baseball caps from Joan Kindle valued at $1050. Thanks to Joan’s continued generosity and support, the Ranch expects to more than triple her original donation, as 100% of the sale price of the hats will be used to exclusively support the ongoing development, operations and maintenance of Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park via the Carrillo Ranch Trust Fund. A letter of appreciation was sent to Joan thanking her for the donation and for her ongoing support of the Carrillo Ranch Trust Fund. ADOPT-A-TRAIL PROGRAM Community service groups, including scout troops, are encouraged to volunteer on the city’s trails and are a vital component of the city’s trails program. Recently, life scout Ben Schafer, Troop 748 donated materials and constructed a trail footbridge to cross a creek tributary on one of the many trails in the Lake Calavera preserve. Ben’s donations for this trail improvement totaled $573. In addition his troop donated over 150 hours of volunteer service to construct the footbridge A letter of appreciation was sent to Ben thanking him for the donation.
