Senior Center upgrades
Senior Center
REPORT
January 4, 2017
Staff have received initial plans for the upgrades that will be taking place over the next several months.
Included in this plan is interior and exterior paint throughout the building, new vinyl flooring in the
auditorium, computer room, and billiards room, library/lounge and new carpet in the offices. These
upgrades are expected to take place over the next several months as we prepare for the opening of the
Pine Avenue Park Community Center
Hepatitis A preventions
Due to the continued concern of the County of San Diego Hepatitis A outbreak, Senior Center staff
requested funding to replace specific furniture in the Senior Center. Staff is currently working with the
architectural firm that designed the new Pine Avenue Community Center and is under contract to for
the Senior Center interior and exterior upgrades. The new furniture, which will be placed in the all the
common areas as well as the Library/Lounge will be a vinyl based allowing staff to clean and sanitize
more frequently.
Senior Prom moving forward
The second annual "Senior Prom" is in the beginning stages of planning. Staff have met with a student
from Sage Creek High School who has selected the prom as her "Genius Project". Over the next few
weeks, this student will meet with Senior Center staff as well as other partner organizations to plan
another amazing event, and give this student an opportunity to learn valuable leadership experience
along with the ability to serve her community by interacting with members of the senior population.
Program Collaboration
The weekly ceramics class participants presented a special holiday treat to those that participated in
the Senior Center Holiday Lunch on Friday, December 22. The ceramic class prepared custom holiday
magnets for everyone in attendance for lunch. Additionally, the City of Carlsbad's L.I.T.E. teen program
prepared and delivered over 200 "candy grams" for both the dining room participants as well the home
meal recipients, who also received personalized placemats and Christmas cards.
Special delivery for Christmas
On Friday, December 23rd, Senior Center staff prepared and assisted with the delivery of over 99 meals
for weekend of Christmas. In addition to the meals, staff collaborated with several differently
organizations to ensure those who were homebound felt special. The City of Carlsbad's L.I.T.E. teen
program prepared "candy grams", personalized placemats and Christmas cards. Home Instead, a
personalized home care company donated gifts to be delivered to the home meal participants as well.
Senior Opportunities outside of the Senior Center
Staff recently met with a representative from Silver Age Yoga Outreach Community (SAYCO). SAYCO
provides free yoga instruction throughout San Diego County for senior citizens. Staff is currently
researching possible locations to host the SAYCO program.
